groundhog sausage?

Yesterday one of the Deputies was telling that he saw a church sign that said "groundhog sausage dinner tonight". He was concerned about this and asked if people really ate those fury rodents.

After laughing until I cried and then explained that it was a pork sausage dinner at the church. He felt relieved and said he thought that groundhogs were too bony anyway.

Just thought it was a funny story and wanted to share it with y'all.

    Yes people do eat them "Furry little creatures" , the young ones are the best. Ground hogs are strict vegitarians and good clean animals. We used to go on shoots, keep the young ones and have a Cook out after the hunt with the Ground Hog the guest of Honor..[;)]

    A lot of folks eat groundhogs...there's a recipee in an old family cookbook for cooking them...never tried them though.

    True, and people around here even eat possums (I've been known to eat a few myself) but this church was offering ground hog sausage. The funny part was his reaction to the thought of eating groundhog and the misinterpretation of the sign.

    I eat groundhog on occasion,; have any of you eaten porcupine?. It is another good animal to eat[:p]. As a kid growing up you didn't ask what you were eating when at grandmas house,it could have been racoon, woodchuck, bear whatever her or my grandfather shot on the farm.

    Groundhog and woodchuck are two names for the same animal. Which ever name you use, they still make a fine barbeque. Probably would make a passable sausage as well. I'm going to hold onto that idea and try it.

    he's never seen some of our groundhogs, they ain't nowhere near bony!

    My grandad talked about how they ate a lot when he was a kid in the 30's. That was a different time, though. My dad also talks of it. As a kid, we shot a lot of woodchuck and always just kicked 'em down the hole. I guess they can't taste too good if my family only ate them in time of trouble and kick 'em down the hole when there is a pig in the poke.[:)]

    I had one by the scruff of his neck one time.Any body that knows about chucks knows thats darn near impossible.There ain't no extra skin in that area[:0]

    Hmmmm- I use a .220 Swift. Does not leave enough whistlepig to MAKE sausage![:p]

    My brother and I chased a big one up a tree. I climbed up to get a rope around its leg. We wanted a pet.
    Well the instant that rope touched the 'hog's leg, it jumped out of the tree , did a big belly flop on solid ground and beat it to the burrow.
    Always wanted to try that again but I can't climb trees anymore.
    BTW another tale from my ol Dad (when he was still with us) is that he had a friend (deaf mute) in the depression. This guy had a dog with a decent nose (or so it seemed). Dog would locate the hog in a burrow and the guy would use a digging tool with a pike end to it to get close to the hog at the end of the hole. Then he would shove the pike in to grab the animal and bring it out. The dog would finish the job. Pop said he sewed that dog up more than one time. Incidently, this was not for sport , it was for food.
    Dad swore it was the truth and the story was the same every time he repeated it throughout the years.
