My daughter (who lives w/her mother) called me today to tell me that she has been suspended from high school for the rest of the semester because a pocket knife was found in her car.
According to her, the knife was found laying in plain sight in the back seat and belonged to one of her friends who evidently lost it in her car. She knew who's knife it was,but didn't know it was in her car.
This is her Senior year and she has not been in any other trouble. Now she won't get to graduate w/her class because of this assinine rule.

Yea, this zero tolerance crap has gotten way, way, waaaay out of hand. I've read about high school students getting suspended/expelled for have Advil. Indiana passed a law outlawing knives of any kind on school grounds. I can't carry by Case pocket knife if I go my daughter's classroom. This law was passed because some student brought a machette to school and hacked somebody with it. 0 -
Rediculous. I understand them wanting to be safe and all, but come on. Reminds of a few years ago in high school. Had a friend almost get suspended from school for accidently leaving a box of shells in his vehicle during deer season. Only reason he got out of it was because his vehicle wasn't actually parked on school grounds.

That's a good idea. I've tried to call her for an update, but no answer. I know her mother was headed to the school for a showdown when I last spoke to her. Hopefully she got her back in.0 -

The way We handle School problems in My Town is to first talk to the School Board and make it clear that We will not pass any School Levies if they do not listen to reason,We got rid of a bad teacher that way and it will work for other things also. 0 -
This exact same thing just happened to a young man in the Atlanta area- except that, in his case, they are also pressing criminal charges.
He had a small swiss army knife in his car. He has no history of trouble. He did not take the knife in the school. Someone walking by saw it on the floorboard.0 -

Every college I went to (3 in all) I had a rifle in the back window of the truck. So did alot of other guys. Noone ever questioned me or took offense. These colleges were all in Maine in the last 10 years.0 -

Travis took his new Christmas pocket knife to school when he was in fifth grade. Got caught with it, showing it off. Principal took it and called me. He gave it back to me, and I chewed me some Travis hiney. Could have been a lot worse in a different school district.
That was in elementary school. After he got to high school and was driving to school, I gave him standing orders: If you are ever summoned to the parking lot and told to unlock your car, you are to call me and throw your keys down the nearest storm drain. I will either come to the school and pick up MY car with my keys, or I will send a tow truck to remove MY car from school property.
Why did I adopt such an attitude? Simple.
If he refused a search, the worst thing that could happen is that he could be forbidden from bringing his car back on campus. That is a manageable problem. If he submitted to a search, and a weapon was found, the worst thing that could happen is that he could be expelled from the school. That is not a manageable problem.0 -

You mean the school officials didn't call the police? They could have called in the SWAT team to surround the school, M-16s and MP-5s drawn. Sent in the dogs, used a taser on her, thrown her face first to the ground, and with a knee in the back handcuff her to be taken downtown and booked for some kind of "homeland security" reason, then thrown in with the REAL criminals until mom could pick her up.
These school officials must be slacking off.
Somebody should report them.

Kids definitely need to be taught to never consent to any search of their person, bags or vehicles, and informed that they have a constitutional right (the 4th mendment) protecting this assertion. They should be told that they may be lied to or bullied into consenting, but to firmly and politely and CLEARLY say "i do not consent to any search. I need to talk to a parent right away."0 -
That is insane...seems to me that you could fight this one in court. In many states, you are allowed to have a concealed weapon in your vehicle on school property if you have a CCW... This just seems ludicrous!!![V] 0 -

I had a pocket knife about 11 years ago at school, cop searched me and I got suspended for 4 months. My boss even came to school with me at the suspension hearing (not sure why there was a hearing to suspend me it was in front of the school board) to say that I only had the knife because I had to use it while fishing working for him.
I almost got arrested as well. I didn't threaten anyone or anything. My buddy got into a fight and I was watching but got nailed also because they knew he was my friend.0 -
Again we see it. In this pc bs society of no personal responsibility, they make an inanimate object the problem. It's a long road back to actually punishing people for their actions and thereby providing the needed deterrent which once existed in abundance. When I was in grade school, in the late seventies, every boy in my class had a pocket knife!

It may not be illegal to have a knife on campus, just against the rules, so the police may not be interested. That's the way it is in Texas. It is a violation of school rules to have a knife in school, or a firearm on the parking lot, but it is not a violation of law. 0 -

I remember, in my day, when members of the school rifle team used to carry their guns on buses, on campus, and keep them in their lockers!
