Teacher Dispatches Raccoon With Nail Gun

HUNTSVILLE, Ark. (AP) -- A high school teacher killed a raccoon with a nail gun after discovering the planned subject of a skinning demonstration was alive.

Superintendent Alvin Lievsay said a student's parent promised to bring in a raccoon for the exercise, but surprised teacher Jerick Hutchinson by bringing the animal in a live trap. Lievsay said Hutchinson, "who used to work in a slaughter house," took the animal outside to the back of his truck Friday and shot it with the nail gun. Lievsay said no students witnessed the raccoon's death.

"He used the nail gun to, as they say, to dispatch the animal," Lievsay said. "It wasn't like he held a nail gun against the head of a cute little animal in front of the class."

Hutchinson used the dead raccoon to demonstrate how to skin the animal and to examine the contents of its stomach. Lievsay said only one student asked not to attend the skinning.

Lievsay said officials at Huntsville High School later talked with Hutchinson and told him not to kill animals on school grounds. The superintendent said Hutchinson, one of two agriculture teachers at the school about 30 miles east of Fayetteville, also would provide more detailed lesson plans in the future.

"He does a great job. The kids love him," Lievsay said.

    How's the saying go? The person who eats the burger is just as guilty as the person who slaughters the cow. What do they expect, the raccoon lives a happy fulfilled life and dies in it's sleep then gets dissected?

    Well I want a question asked?.. This Teacher killed the coon with a nailgun... Just how did he do that? Air compressor in his vehicle? Or do they make an electric nailgun? Did he hook up to a plug, hook up the nailgun and bingo.. or what?

    I have an 18 volt Dewalt Finish Nailer. It was probably something like that. Or a Paslode that runs on LP.

    I have skinned coons, coyotes, and cleaned paddle fish at the local high school for demonstrations.

    Course mine were dead before I took them to the school.

    Well, ONE version is called a Powder Actuated Tool- like Hilti, Remington, Redhead- uses a blank cartridge that drives a piston. Piston pushes the fastener thru wood into concrete, metal, etc. No air compressor needed. Older design than the Paslode butane powered tools, but works same sorta way. And no, they are legally NOT firearms- they are tools.

    Yeah, I have fired many trim nails with the Paslode. Holds a butane cylinder, and a rechargable battery. It holds a mag with about 300 of the 2 inch trim nails. Very high quality tool, great, because you don't have to listen to a damn compressor run, and you don't have to drag a pneumatic hose around.
    It would do the job on a coon, if you held it to his head.

    I have a Jamerco that is powder actuated, I just love the smell of gun powder, even if I am driving nails[;)] Just dont fire one of these indoors with out ear protection.

    Reminds me of the supposedly true story of the hunter who shot a nice buck and hung his slinged rifle against the rack for a picture,when the animal revived and took off with gun in rack.
