Ok, call me dense, but I have to ask. The bear appears to be near, but not actually IN the woods. What's the answer?

Wooded area is usally considered "in the woods". Might be kind of hard to be "in" any wood unless you're a termite.[;)]

As a lawyer I think you would have to agree that just because bears crap on the highway, it doesn't mean they don't crap in the woods. So, the answer would still be yes, they crap in the woods.

I dunno. Kind a looks like a path to me. One could easily say that a bear poops on a path. Not in the woods.

Without smelling it, you can't be sure it's a he, or that it's not just passing gas.

So, I'll leave you to you interpitation.[^]

Well, it shows a bear pooping at the edge of the woods.

But yes, a wild bear does poop in the woods, unless he's at the edge of the woods.

After considering all the input, I've about decided bears poop pretty much wherever they want to.

If I see a pile of what appear to my 25 years of living in the Maine woods eyes to be bear poop out in the forest(which is common), I assume that it was deposited there by a bear. This particular photo seems to be a bear squatting on the side of the road.

I still don't believe that bear can chit in the woods unless thier termmites. A frogs butt can only exhale , not inhale, same as yours. We all had better get a hobby.[:D][:D][:D]
