I just got one..Piliated Woodpecker

Just opened the garage door and saw my buddy the woodpecker at the end of my driveway right on the side of the road. I tried to get a closer shot but it flew off.

    Pilieated woodpeckers and the red tailed hawks on my place keep me entertained.
    I caught one of the red tailed hawks last year and the other hawks all started surrounding me and screaching.
    I think it was a young hawk that didin't fly yet and was running through my woods.

    Ya, They are neat until one decides that he likes the tree right next to your house and starts his pecking when you are trying to sleep.[:(!]

    very nice Woodie shot,I wish he were the Ivory billed...I have a pair of red tailed hawks nesting in a red oak,when another hawk comes around he goes nuts but he (or she as I cannot tell em apart)but they pay the crows no mind at all.These piliated woodys have a goofy flight pattern and I love their call..

    We have a standard black woodpecker with a red/white head that resides in our area (Central Illinois). He likes to drill the STEEL fill pipe on our old Silo! It echoes across our farm like nothing else. Every year that bird sits up there and hammers away for hours on end. His head HAS to hurt when he finishes. [:D]

    That's going to be the downy (smaller beak) or the hairy (larger beak) woodpecker. Or maybe you see both.

    They never actually saw one in Eastern Louisiana, they just think they heard it. You have your best chance of finding one in the Cache River National Wildlife Refuge in Arkansas, which is where the alleged bird that proves they aren't extinct was spotted. The best part is there is a $10K reward for anyone that can find his nest.

    When I lived in MVP's area there were lots of those beautiful birds. I lived next to the Cedar River watershed and was sorta remote. We used to see and hear them all the time, but that was 18 yrs. ago. Not sure how plentiful they are now.

    I still hear them daily. They are real noisy in the morning calling back and forth to eachother.
    The Cedar river watershed is a true nature lovers dream. I used to go in there all the time until I became a resposible adult. Cougar, Deer, Elk, Bear, Bobcat, coyote are some of the wild animals you will see. I had Elk tracks on my place this week.
    A Bald Headed Eagle landed on the road in front of my truck about 2 weeks ago and was grabing some road kill.

    It is heavy sprawl all around but I live in an R5 zoned pocket that borders the watershed. No new houses can be built on anything less then a 5 acre lot.

    I haven't seen one of those since my Mother-in-Law moved into town.
    They had a couple of those at their place when they lived in the sticks.
