Probably moving the jobs over seas. When we have lost the means of production, we have lost America.

Both parties support free trade in the international community. Problem is I don't think I have seen a positive trade balance since the 1950's or 1960's.
So Free Trade has the effect of floating wages down to a world average. If an auto worker in Mexico makes $2-3 per hour and in China its less than $1 per hour and there are little benefits paid in both places then the $25-30 per hour auto worker in the US will see his wage base gradually slide down to the level of the competition. If the US wage rate does not come down then the car business goes to China or Mexico.
This is an over simplification of how it works but it is by far the biggest part of the equation.0 -

They've been doing that for a long time. I worked in the L.A. assembly plant before it was closed. Ford & GM also closed their L.A. plants long ago. 0 -
I believe it said on the news today (if I heard it right at the restaurant) that automakers in the US have now cut around 258,000 jobs since 2005. That's huge. [:(] Don't know what you can do about it though when the competition's making peanuts. No idea what the answer is. People in this country are so used to the lifestyles we lead now and the 20-30 an hour pay with great benefits, that anything less is unthinkable. These workers in other countries are probably lucky to put food on the table. If you're in need of health care, I guess it's too bad. You just become sick and/or die. That's pretty hard to believe to me but that's got to be what happens around the world on a regular basis. The good manufacturing jobs are disappearing fast.
Computers, robots and the 1 dollar an hour workers globally are ensuring that. I don't know what this country is going to be or do in 100 years. I'm sure we'll have 5 times the fast food restaurants and Walmarts, but not much manufacturing any more.0 -
I just tested for a car making job right here in Indiana last week. They were being pretty darn particular about jumping through the hoops just so.
The newspaper said about 10,000 people applied for 1,200 jobs.0 -
i dont see our jennifer grandstand hopping on the news bragging about this after bragging about google and 500 jobs in five years in ann arbor ...whats the matter ole gov.?..reality set in that the voter's screwed up and re-elected you for another term ?... well i guess she was right...we got blown away with no let up in the storm for a long time[xx(] 0
