Motorcyclists--Best source for tough thick leather
I have a leather jacket. I'm looking for a vest. I prefer to wear my denim jacket when I ride but I'd like some better abrasion protection underneath so I'm considering a leather vest since leather is about the best stuff out there for abrasion protection. From the pictures I've seen, a leather vest would cover the torso areas that see most abrasion damage when a rider goes down.
I'm looking for an online resource where I can purchase a thick tough leather vest--none of this fancy pretty lambskin crap or whatever other thin soft leather it is that I see out there. Any suggestions?

Actually most of the damage occurs on the hips, thighs, and arms/hands. Your vest will not help that a lot. If you have chaps, go with something with sleeves. I wear Hein Gericke, but my stuff is near 20 years old, don't know what they make today.

I use ballistic nylon when I ride. You can clean it with woolite and warm water and it offers better protection than leather. Leather is a fad (or was), look at what all the professional wear!! And costs a lot less than leather. You take a little slow speed dump and get that road-rash on your leathers, it's there forever. Sure, some think of them as battle scars, but what the professionals use can't be all bad. Oh, sure, some will say that the sponsors demand you wear "their gear" whether it be leather of nylon, but even the independent, sponsorless racer will opt for ballistic nylon every time. 0 -

A vest will not do much. Best thing for under denim (which does not really offer much protection in a wreck) is the Troy Lee Descender Protector:

Compared to modern syntectic material, leather has been proven to not be all that good at protecting you in case you go down. 0 -
I have seen a lot of accidents in our club. The ones who have the top grade leather come out the best. Cheap stuff does not protect you and if you are in short sleves its a mess to clean up.
The nylon stuff with armor is great also, much ligher and cooler in summer.
Actually sportsmans guide offers a lot of decent discount priced leather that is pretty good stuff. I use their chaps and they are heavyweight and nice.
Harley handles some of best leather clothing but very high priced.
Stone Creek is another place to buy heavy leather pants and other goodies.

I wear a old style highway jacket from Wilson Leather. it clashes with my cafe racer GS1000, but with the liner and the ability to half zip it down the front, it offers alot of options. Plus, when I bought it, I weighed 40 more than I do now so I can fit a hoodie sweatshirt under it when it's really cold out. 0 -

Fleece is great under the leather in the cold weather. It will wick away the mosture and keep you warm when cotton gets wet from sweat and will cause you to be colder than normal.0 -

I appreciate the info. Maybe I'm uniformed. However, I've seen pictures and it just seems that most abrasion damage occurs to the torso areas that would be covered by a vest. It looks like Fox Creek leather has the very best stuff. My pet peeve is thin cheap leather. What good is it? I trust leather that is advertised specifically by it's thickness. I could cover myself in armor but why? Heck, I could wear a motorcycle helmet while I drive my Blazer just for that added protection. A heavy leather vest with long sleeves underneath, boots, kevlar-lined police gloves, ballistic-rated motorcycle goggles and a DOT approved half-helmet is my cross between safety and comfort.
