best scope for new gun?
Pretty soon I'll have my new 20" Bushmaster Varmint rifle finished and ready to go, except it's minus a scope. Anyone have any recomendations for good scopes for this rifle? I'm planning on using it to pick up coyote calling (since we have more coyotes than you can shake a stick at). I'm thinking something like a Leupold 3-9 x 40 if they're cheap enough. However, does anyone know if Bushnell still makes their variable power 'high definition' scopes? A friend has one and its nice and bright and a good scope. Thanks for the help.

Leupold is a very good scope.
But, I've got Leupolds and Nikons, and in comparison, I'm not convinced that you necessarily get what you pay for with the more expensive Leupold.0 -
Try the Weavers. Good scopes for the money. My PO on leupolds is that they are overpriced and overated. Sightron also makes a good scope for the money.
I personally have a soft spot for the older steel tube Weavers. When I find one in good condition I snatch it up. I've bought 2 from Brian Perazone who sells on this board. I forget what his screen name is. Good product at good price.0 -
Leupold Mark 4 a little pricey though. Congrades on a cool gun[^] 0 -
I looked at a Leupold VX-I, VX-II, and a Nikon Prostaff side by side.
I was prepared to get the VX-II, and took the Nikon home instead for 1/2 the price. Better clarity IMHO. Prostaffs in 3-9x40 are going for under $150. For the price, they're unbeatable. Lifetime, no BS warranty.0 -
You get the most bang for a buck with Burris. Swift is a really good buy for the money. See what you can get in a good used scope. 0 -
A VX-III if you can afford it. 0 -

Burris Signature Series.
Is there an echo in here? JustC has picked the best scope out there for the $$ spent. Warrenty is one word: Forever. no qualifiers.0 -
all listed are good, but I would opt for 12-14 top end power 0 -
Thanks for all the ideas, now I have a nice list to consider from, I'm going to wait for the next gun show to come to Austin and see if I cant find a good deal on something there. 0 -
Through the years I have rather disappointed in the scopes offered at gun shows. You will probably do bettwer either here or on ebay. 0
