I'm not quite sure why the critics only give these Lonesome Dove flicks 3.5 stars.
They are as good as it gets IMO!!!!0 -

It is real good.....Very good for a sequal....0 -
It's a good investment of time. However, Jon Voight "McCall" doesn't hold a candle to Tommy Lee Jones' "Woodrow".
Damn, the first Lonesome Dove was awesome! I still can watch it end to end (when time permits).

The first one was killer....I have it on DVD as well...But to me it is extremely rare to see a sequal that damn near equals the first. this one is very good ...Infact I thought Oliver Reed's performance should have reeled in an Emmy!!!By far the best role of his shortened life!!! 0 -
I've got both on VHS and have watched them many times. I know the original almost by heart. It follows the book by Larry McMurtry as close as any movie I've ever seen. As best I can remember, Tommy Lee Jones had a prior commitment and could not be Call in the second one, but it was a very good sequel, considering there was not novel to follow. It's funny that both Call and Gus seemed like giants, though both are rather short in stature. Many of the caracters in the original have gone on to become stars. I could go on and on about the original, as it is my all time favorite movie and novel. I'll end this rant by saying, again, "Return" was one of the best sequels I ever saw. It had some Texas-size boots to fill.
