SEMI-Auto Uzi for home protection
So I am thinking about getting something bigger than my grandfathers .38 special for home protection. I am trying to decide between a 12 gauge or a Semi auto Uzi.

I have a Glock 23 with night sights, a tactical light and 3- 15 round magizines on my nightstand. That should hold them off until I can get to the safe. I would rather have a shotgun than an Uzi though. 0 -
uzi is a very bad choice, not only would it make you look bad in court, single handed accuracy is very poor, there are many lightweight hand guns that can hold equal amount of rounds if that's what your going after, and are far more accurate 0 -
I would go with the UZI ans mount a maxmillion spot light on it for night patrol. Never knw who is hiding in the shadows and you will want to be able to spot them and then rute them out with the UZI[:o)][:p] 0 -
12 g. One that looks like a bird gun. Because if you DO have to cap a goblin in the house, you want to STOP him- and when you get to court (and yeah, count on it) do you want the DA to be holding up an Uzi, or a 12 g dove gun ???? 0 -

12 gauge, I have mossberg 500 with a pistol grip and a 18 inch barrel, I have a good feeling that it will get the job done[;)] 0 -
you can get a stock for your uzi. it can be a short wood stock, or a folding "kick" stock that deploys fast and works just as well as the wood stock. I say that because you can then use it as a shoulder arm, which is far better for aiming, especially in a 1,000,000+ stress situation.
full size shoulder arms in houses can be too clumsy. therefore I wouldn't recommend a 12 gauge. worse yet is a pistol-grip-only on a 12 gauge.
I think anything with a short buttstock should be the first consideration. why not a pistol for your "primary" home defense? because of the relatively poor aiming. why do they make pistols in the first place? because they're for concealed carry and/or use as a sidearm, for when your main weapon fails to fire. or use in tight enclosed spaces. a house isn't small enough to limit yourself to just a pistol.
so, some of the short buttstock choices would be an uzi, AK, AR, MP5, etc.
since rifle rounds are much more likely to penetrate structures if you miss, pistol rounds would be better for light home defense.
now, uzis are somewhat antiquated. you can find more and better parts and accessories for a semiauto MP5. also, I believe, you can get an MP5 in .40 cal not just 9mm.
therefore I'd recommend an MP5 over an uzi, but an uzi would still be better than a shotgun.
think about magazine capacity too. you don't know how the situation will turn out, or what you might be faced with, so the more the better.
if you want full-size industrial strength home protection, comprimise on the overpenetration and length. get an AK or one of those scout length M1a's. I still wouldn't recommend an AR due to reliability issues, and you can do better with 7.62x39 or 7.62x54.0 -

I think for the money of an Uzi I can get a decent AK47 which is a rifle that I am really looking forward to owning.0 -

While it is true the shotgun would be hard to beat for close range stopping power there are other factors to take into consideration. There are good points and bad points for both shotguns and pistols/rifles. For a close range shot with little time to aim the shotgun will hold the advantage but on the other hand if the criminal is close to other family members it would be at a disadvantage. A handgun/rifle will allow more precise shot placement while a rifle is at a disadvantage for overpenetration since it not only has the ability to stop an intruder but also go through walls putting not only family members in other rooms in danger but surrounding homes. A rifle is also large like the shotgun and is harder pick up and aim fast. The pistol is small and easy to pick up, aim, and fire with an advantage over the shotgun/rifle and when used with a fragmenting rounds or hollowpoints overpenetration is not as likely as with the rifle/shotgun. Also the pistol is at an advantage over the shotgun for ammo capacity. If your choice is a rifle I would choose a caliber that would expend the bullets energy fast after hitting the intruder or a wall such as a 223 and never a highpower 30 cal or larger fmj round since they will not only go through the intruder but also your walls with plenty of power left to wound or kill. Also if a rifle is chosen I would say it should be compact with a large capacity mag with a pistol grip and folding stock and a barrel length around 16" as well as lite enough to be held and fired with one arm if needed. As far as damage to your home one small bullet hole in the wall is much less damageing than the large hole a round of buckshot will leave. Overall I would say a semi-auto pistol with a large capacity mag when used with ammo designed to fragment is the most practical and safe choice for home defense even if it is a Uzi pistol (Uzi pistol and not carbine). 0 -

Maybe hard to find too, but it's a 12 gauge AK.
I have a Bullpup it's really compact, but wide. It's one of those guns that makes me wish I was a man, because my smaller frame has a harder time with the recoil.0 -
UZI if you don't have neighbors and other people in the house. Shotgun if other wise. But then again you can't go wrong with the shotgun and UZI combo considering the people around you. 0
