    +1
I personally like the .308 round more, but for "just plinking" I would go with the .223 for the same reasons that goldeneagle stated.

If you plan on using it in an SHTF circumstance, better pray that your attacker doesn't have a .308, and doesn't start shooting from 1,000 yards.

Yeah, I know that that is an unlikely situation, but will you bet your life that it is impossible??

but unless we are dealing with actions vs. government; the badguy is more likely to have a Glock-17 and hold it sideways [:p]

Do what I did and buy the .308 now (I got a Cetme) and then save up and buy a .223 later (RRA AR15).

Im not a SHTF type of guy but I do believe in a--holes coming on my property and im not worred about somebody sniping me! I just want a fun rifle that would be a fun plinker that could take out a ???? out to 200 yards. Just in case[:D]

    "But, your LIFE ??"
Yes, because that's an unrealistic scenario on every level.

If you have to engage an 'attacker' at 1,000 yards, it will make no difference what kind of weapon you have.

No one except the highly skilled would attempt somthing like that, and that's far enough away for him to be invisible to you unless you're in some kind of hide watching him approach. Given that he is then probably a professional with great skill, he will have the drop on you and will kill you easily, without you getting the chance to return fire anyway.

Add to that the fact that most every shooter in the US doesn't have the skill or equipment required to make a shot at that range and even hit a target the size of a Dodge Ram, much less a human being or animal.

So yes, that entire scenario is rediculous.

ok so just a thought! a 223 has a good punch to take some body down and not just piss him off?

A 22lr will take somebody down if properly used. Either the 223 or 308 will work for you. It depends on which one you can use with the most confidence.

If you just want a plinker then go with the 223. It's going to be cheaper to shoot and will be just as fun.

If you want knockdown then go with the 308.

Let us know whether you make a good decision or a bad decision.

People who have never been shot at can make uninformed suggestions.

However, maybe he could design a video game for you, that doesn't risk HIS life.

At 200 yards you could go with an AK. Less expensive rifle, less expensive ammo and more dependable. Oh thats right, no AK in Kalifornia.

Either one's good in my opinion. .308 is a little more utilitarian, but .223 will do in a pinch.

I prefer .308, but that's personal preference. Go with your gut says you'll enjoy more.
