Best Option for Feral Pigs -- .22 mag or 12 ga #4
Okay, I know these are definitely NOT the best options for pigs. However, in my area that's the best that is allowed for pigs on public land (unless it's a deer day).
Anyhow, given these two choices only (since that's reality), which should I go with: .22 mag and go for head shots, or 12 guage #4 shot w/ a full choke?

That is a bad choice.
The number 4s will destroy piggie on a lung shot, at close range. Past twenty yards I wouldn't want to take the shot.
I wouldn't want to hunt 'em with a .22

Unless the headshot is placed perfectly, expect it bounce off. Followed shortly by irate piggy explaining to you the error of your ways (you DID notice the tusks, right?) #4 buck may be a tad on the light side (dress one out, check the gristle) but would be better than 22 mag. Given a choice, would use 00 or even 000 for penetration. 0 -

We have shot them with .22s. Try the 60 grain Aguila Sniper SubSonic, head shot and you should do fine. 0 -
I was raised on a farm, and my job was getting up well before daylight and starting the fire under the scalding vat.
We would generally kill the hogs with a .22 LR from a single shot rifle to the head. However, we had one large sow, and these are domestic hogs remember, who wouldn't even fall down, after six or eight shots from the 22. She finally had to be killed with a 'single tree' to the head, which country folks know as a very strong wooden bough, bound on each end and in the middle with iron shackles and hook-ups, with which an implement is hooked up to a horse for pulling. You city slickers and yankees would most likely recognize it as a decorative item on the wall of your local CRACKERBARREL Country Store and Restaurant.
I wouldn't want to shoot either of the guns mentioned at a big, irate and prodigiously hardheaded porcine porker. Not unless I were at a safe distance. As a kid on the farm, we used to provoke hogs into attacking us, but always had a tall fence very close by. I've seen hogs bite huge bass in half with a single bite, and a hickory nut? Not even a problem for a big one. We did lots of other stupid things too....I'm surprised any of us made it to adulthood.

I'm located in southern Alabama. On the public land, hogs can be hunted during any other open season. However, the law states that you can only use weapons and ammunition approved for those hunts. For example, if you want to hunt hogs on deer days you can use a ceterfire rifle, slugs, handgun, etc.
If you want to hunt hogs at any other time than a deer day, however (i.e. sqirrel season, raccoon season, turkey season, etc.) you can only used what's approved for that game. In college we had a pig roast. We went out to a hog farm and bought a pig on the hoof. Two of the guys held the hog down, and I shot it in the head with a .22 lr from a pistol. Instant dead pig.
This was a long time ago, the farmer showed me exactly where to shoot, it was in the forehead as I recall.
Now, on that hunt, if you can just get two guys to hold the pig down while you shoot...
Seriously you can kill 'em with a .22 to the head while hunting, but the target is small.
I have killed lots of 'em with lung shots with regular hunting rifles. We used to have the same rules in Georgia as you now have, we just ignored the stupid law and shot the hogs with our deer rifles.

Ref: slaughtering a hog- yep, have used a 22 LR to STUN many a farm hog. From straight ahead, draw line left eye to right ear, left ear to right eye. Where the lines cross, there is a spot about 1 inch in diameter where a 22 bullet will drop the pig like a bad habit. Stick the carotid artery and jugular vein, and let them bleed out. Now, having said THAT- how many of you can hit that spot EVERY TIME on a pig that is not standing quietly directly in front of, and 20 ft away from you? (DANGER WILL ROBINSON!) 0 -

Use the 22mag out to 75yds and put the shot in the forward area of the gut about halfway between the shoulder and knee in height. Might take two shots, but usually they don't realize they have been shot and keep eating anyway. The 22 bullet zig-zags around in there like a buzz saw cutting up lungs,heart, arteries so that Mr Pig will quietly drop dead in a short time never knowing what happened. Just stay away from the shoulder and head shots or it may just get under the plate and do no damage. 0
