Polytech AK, now you see it, now you don't
When the import ban was looming on newly made Polytech AK's, the Chinese took a little too long in putting on the brakes at the 386 factory where the legendary milled receivered Legend was made. As it turns out they had plenty of room on the much cheaper made stamped Mak90 export list. So, being Chinese they simply buffed off the Polytech logo, removed the AK shoulder stock, made an adapter that screwed onto the receiver to hold a Mak90 stock, wrote free hand in electric pencil "Sprngfld M1" of all things and sent them off as pre-banned Mak90's. I used to own a Legend that I sold off cheap to some tactical gizmo nut out west. He wasted no time in strapping lazer guided, infra-red tactical sighting on it along with the optional GPS and tri-lens flashlight. Now the little carbine weighs 14 lbs and he had to hire two Mexicans to carry the battery packs. I also have the above mentioned imported "Sprngfld M1". Same milled receiver, chromed bolt and bore, trigger...everything except the buttstock. You can see where they buffed off the Polytech logo, it still has the 386 stamp and Polytech serial numbers. Now the Legends are going for $1600 and more while these Legends in Mak90 disguise go for about 25% of that if the seller doesn't know what he has. The milled Chinese AK's are the best AK's out there in my opinion.
Just thought you might find this little historical tidbit of interest.

Only the Legend AK is bringing that kind of price. The stamped Poly's are trying to get half that and not doing too well.0 -

Those are nice guns but I just have trouble getting over how neutered they are. The lack of a cleaning rod annoys me. 0 -

Is the 386 still on the receiver? It looks like it is. The one I have has the name above the milled out side buffed off and the new name poorly engraved to the right of the milled part. I have seen three others besides mine and they were all identical in these details.0 -
Here is the above the mill step 386
And like yours, the new name is pencil engraved to the right of the mill step.0 -
Does your's say Norinco? Or does it say Sprngfld M1? 0 -

SO why again is there a ban on Norinco's? 0 -
just went down and got my gun its milled has the 386 and hand wrote C.J.A.SFLD M1 {not miss spelled} but the trigger is blued always thought it was different 0 -
MVP, yours has the Norinco stamp.I never saw a milled and marked Norinco before.Seen plenty of stamped receiver Norinco Mak90's. Sounds like 25 skinner has one of the mystery guns.We need a picture of where the original name was ground off.
I am trying to find all of the details about this switch the chinese made. It is one of those stories like the 59 milled receiver original Armalite AR10's that slipped by the atf before they shut it down.Probably lots of things like this happened as the rules where changed so fast and it takes time to re-tool a factory. And no-one is going to call back a freighter already out to sea with a load of what where legal guns when the ship left port. I think this is what happened with these guns. They were already enroute and had to be altered by the ship's crew to make it past the ban.0
