    I left for recruit training in October of 1980.

    We were "ordered" to file for an absentee ballot.

    #1 It was much too late to get an absentee ballot by mail.

    #2 If I had wanted to vote by absentee ballot I certainly would have done so before I shipped out.

    #3 I didn't really have a preference between the peanut farmer or the actor and I knew absolutely nothing about local politics in terms of issues, offices, or candidates.

    When I declined to do the paperwork I ended up doing bends & thrusts outside while the rest of the recruits sat in the air conditioned class room.

    ... not that it stopped him from ordering that young man to run a billion times around the entire base.[;)]
