Take Control of the VA Tech argument now !
As we all know the Anti-Gun lobby is already using this tragedy to promote stricter gun control measures. The New York Times has already placed the blame on the easy availability of guns and the "lax" gun control and gun licensing laws in place in Virgina. They have completely ingnored the fact that the shooter as a foreign national on a student visa was in possession of these weapons illegally. Some reports have said that the serial numbers on the guns had been removed, meaning they were likely stolen. Now is the time to send a THOUGHTFUL rebuttal to the anti-gun crowd while there is still time. Debating the issue here does us no good as that is "preaching to the choir". Send an e-mail or letter to the major news organizations (ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, FOX, AP, etc.). Argue the facts. Some talking points to bring up:
1: After the first shooting this year at VA Tech, students who were licensed to carry concealed weapons by the State of Virginia requested and were denied permission to carry weapons on campus for defense.
2: The shooter was a foreign national and as such was in possession of the weapons used illegally.
3: The shooter's first move upon entering the lecture hall was to chain the doors and prevent police interference leaving the students with no viable means of defense.
4: The shooter had planned to kill as many as he could. Had a gun not been available this likely would have been a bombing rather than a shooting.
DO NOT BE PARTISAN OR ENGAGE IN PARTISAN NAME CALLING. Some phrases that should not appear in any e-mail or letter you send are:
"...because of you liberals..."
"...because of anti-gunners..."
"...because of democrats..."
"...because of Sarah Brady..."
"...AK47's just look scary but are less deadly than deer rifles..."
etc., etc.
anything along these lines will weaken your argument even if true. I know we all think that the "commie,lib, bradycrats" just don't get it. Remember they think the exact same thing about us. This is not the time for name calling or arguing any issue other than the ones brought up by this specific incident. Just put out the facts as they apply to this incident and leave at that. This prevents the argument from veering off course and giving the other side something to latch on to that is unrelated. The facts honestly presented support what we have all been saying all along; that lawful carry by responsible law abiding gun owners is a benefit to all of us. If we get together and put out our side of the story NOW, we have a chance of preventing this from being a propaganda piece for the anti-gun lobby and we actually might get some progress on individual carry rights for law abiding citizens.

If only we could have the ears of millions as the liberals and even the President of that "peaceful nation" Iran has. Maybe we could make the reactionaries listen. However it is junk like this that makes a tragedy into a political platform.

This guy was a nut. Take guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens and you get criminals and nuts with guns and no one to stop them but police who arrive often too late (not their fault just the facts).
We are NOT a gun culture. We are a country born of violence. We did not sit on our butts and wait 200 years like Canada and wait until mother England gave us freedom. We took it. And, the fight to keep it from a POLICE state has never finished. There are still Tories out there.
My heart bleeds for the parents and families of the students and professors who died. But taking guns away would not prevent this -- it would allow it to happen again and again.
I read one source that says the serial numbers were filed off the guns. Those were not bought at the local sporting goods store.
Look at Montreal as another example. Canada -- as strict as Australia on guns and they had a mass murder at a campus not all that long ago. Gun laws do not stop nuts. Restraining orders do not stop nuts. Liberal laws that don't lock up mentally ill are more to blame for this than any guns.0
