This eliminates immediate 'draw and fire.'

Every situation is different, you never know "what you will do" in a situation like this until it actually happens.

What you 'say' or 'think' you will do is purely hypothetical, like the question.

    Critter.

Dang! You sure write like 'Clouder...

    Would that I could.

If I could write like Whiteclouder, I'd not only be a writer, I'd be an author.

As it is, I'm a gopher trapper.

    assume defensive position postion

    maintain awareness of perpetrators location

    call police

hope to hell robbery goes off without a hitch, robber gets hits cash and heads off on his way.

if he moves towards us, he dies. otherwise, my job as i see it is to protect myself and my family. if neither the store nor the cashier personally have taken steps in regards to safety, it may be cold hearted but thats not my responsibility. my mife and kid are.

    Okay, Time Out everybody!

This was an excellent exercise. Do this more often. Create an entire website that gets into the state-by-state legal issues, mindset, etc. Every CCW man or woman, even those who do not carry CCW, should be going through these kinds of "what if" scenarios regularly. This can save lives.

Twenty five feet? And the perp doesn't know you're there? Seems like you have the time to do a well aimed single action shot. I'd go for it...provided that in this scenario:

    1. The cashier is off at a right angle to the line of fire, and my equipment is equal to the task.

    2. Know that my family would crouch down, and be silent if they saw me draw a gun.

If I had doubts about items 1. and 2., then I have no idea what I'd do. Way too many "what if's" to answer your question accurately.

Maybe I'd stay hidden with my family, dunno. To me, it's an unanswerable question. At least I'm being honest with myself.

Interesting to find out what others say they would do. It's what keeps these forum discussions lively, if nothing else. Joe

EDIT: Tomahawk..just read your post. Please, never advance. Let him come to you. You are able to get a better shot off while stationary, and the distance is lessening, but the perp is doing the moving. Bad for him. And it will look much better for you in the police report. Joe

Hopefully at 25 feet at least 1 round would strike the perp. 1st and foremost is get the family out of the way. Secondly refer to #1 as I assume he don't know you are there so it should be a good shot from an arm rest position. Maybe even if you missed the first shot, most take off. I do not believe you have a LEGAL obligation to intervene although maybe a moral one. I'm not sure if I would call 911 because they will tell you to run and if you take action then you were advised not to. IMHO

In the scenario given, I am presuming that the perp does not know that my family and I are in the store. He thinks it is just he and the clerk. Am I right?

I am in the back of the store, and he doesn't know I am here. There will be no call to 911, lest the bad guy hear my voice and respond violently to that little surprise.

Seems to me the options are to remain still or act, and call 911 for an after-action report.

Hmmm...remain still or act? Can I live with myself if I do nothing and the clerk dies? Remember, the perp has a hoody on and has his back to me. I can't identify him from Adam, so I am worthless as a witness.

I can probably count on my wife to be silent, but who can tell when a 3-year-old is going to start babbling about something? And, if the perp fires his gun, my child is probably going to start crying and draw his attention to us. I think in this case, I would have to act, and act quickly and decisively, and without challenge.

Some liberal candy-ass might call it murder. I call it protecting my family and an innocent teenager from a street goblin.

Law in Virginia- with what APPEARS to be a firearm. http://law.justia.com/virginia/codes/toc1802000/18.2-282.html

Agree with send family towards safety, while I cover BG. They have 15 ft to go to be concealed from the BG. After that, stand ground, and what follows depends on geometry of the situation (angle to BG, angle to clerk, etc)

Is the cashier kind of hot? You know, the cheerleader look? Do they sell cold beer at the convenience store?

joe, i know me, i understand what your saying, but i know me and i can close that distance before he could wheel, and i wouldn't take the chance of him shooting the girl, and he would either be shot or have a broken dam neck, but i would positively attack, remember, my wife and child is on the floor and my mind would allready be set[V][}:)]

There is no right or wrong answer. I was listening to the news the other day while driving and they where talking about a shooting in a mall somewhere got to thinking how many of us carry and can shoot but don't often think about "What would I do right now if the excrement hit the air mover" A few times I have stopped and looked around and relized I was in a very bad spot if something should happen. Think about it.

I not only carry extra ammo, I ALWAYS carry an extra firearm.

What I'd like to think I'd do is tell the female to take the child out the back as I was simultaneously putting 3 rounds in the bad guy.

One thing my many years of living have proven to me, is that no one knows what they will do when a hypothetical situation becomes real.

Unless you have seen that elephant, you have no idea how you would react.
You can only pray that your training would kick in and you'd do the right thing.

sorry I have, out of state with no gun when a robbery was announced. I reached for my piece ( and it wasn't there ) just reaction... Black Guy said it was a joke. I told him if I had my gun he would have been [xx(] Pizza Hut, Milwalkie, Wisconsin 2003 I won't forget that night. Wife was sitting next to me near the door.

Put the family at the end of the aisle on the floor. Flank right moving quickly and quietly to ascertain that the punk doesn't have any friends trying to flank me. Flanking right also gives me a clear shot taking the clerk out of the line of fire, if he indeed is armed and poses a threat I will eliminate said threat with a perfectly executed Mozambique drill. move in on target kick his weapon away, quickly clear rest of room to make sure that double sure that all threats are eliminated. AT this point I'm going to ask the clerk if i might buy a fountain soda to calm my nerves. I will then pay for the soda and any other beverages as I likely going to indisposed for police interrogation for a while. At this time I'll ask the wife to please call my lawyer. Once I am confident that the cops are on the way, I'll place my weapon on the counter cylinder open with my driver's license and CCW permit next to it and wait calmly sipping a coke with my hands in plane view. At this point it is important to note that while I'll cooperate fully with the police I have nothing to say until my lawyer arrives. It's not that I don't trust the LEOs but I do not want to say anything while amped up on adrenaline, (and soda) that could be used against me in a court of law.

You've obviously considered different situations when your skills might be called upon.

    Very good.

What one would do to have a good 22 target pistol in his possesion at this time of need. Precise, and no mess.

Different people, different priorities. I have no immediate family, in the form of wife or kids, so I can't realistically imagine how my priorities would stand if I did. I certainly can't condemn those who say their spouse and kids have to come first, even at the expense of a stranger's life.

I, myself, though, as it stands now, would act to preserve the life of the cashier. Yell "freeze!" (with gun drawn) then do as any police officer is trained to do in a similar situation -- assume that not freezing indicates intent and ability to do harm, on the robber's part. Bang bang. The 3" .357 is an old friend I haven't seen in awhile, but I expect I and it would still work well together. Within the confines described, with time for deliberate aim for the first shot, the second round is just insurance.

I believe I will state, at this point, that while I can imagine what I would do, based on what I believe I should do, I don't know and I hope to God I never have to find out.

Or after 6 .357's in the chest, you calmly explain to the police that the poor sole must have bought that sweat shirt in China because he is obviously dead from lead poisoning.

Since I live in IL, am not cop, and and there is no ccw here, I and the family would make a run for the back door.

Once I were outside, I'd remember that I left my cell phone at home.
I would go to my vehicle, load my cased firearm, and hope to get a license plate #, of the crook, while seeking cover.

IN ohio if you shoot a man he has to be threatning your life or somebody elses life if thats a snickers bar your in deep doodoo, so first you secure your family letting them call police.then take a stand that is defencive. if he fires a weapon then you can shoot him. otherwise he takes the money and I wave by by

Considering the trend for robbers to needlessly kill their victims and witnesses, I might be inclined to take the bad guy out before he realized I was there. It sounds cold, I know, but this is Texas, by God, and we don't worry too much over robbers that commit suicide in this way.

[:D] Love the mentality down here. [:D]

The back of the store is all glass door fridges and at one end there is a door that you are not sure where it goes but it is ajar.

    WHAT DO YOU DO?

While everyone is distracted I'd probably help myself to three or four Dove bars [:p].
