This is the lot I want, It's a 52, not a 53.
Lot 149 - Winchester - Model 53 Musket - extremely rare. Winchester B3 scope - . - .22 long rifle, 28 barrel. - Excellent condition. - To the best of our knowledge, three are reported to exist in original configuration, with this reportedly the best condition specimen known among the survivors. This is the exact gun pictured in Houze's book The Winchester Model 52, which notes this model was introduced as a training rifle for military academies ca. 1924-1925. - Barrel & action retain 98% thinning original blue. Barrel bands mottled blue & plum; excellent markings. Excellent wood w/ minor handling marks. Winchester B3 scope retains 90% blue, good optics, in Nov. 5, 1907, patent marked mounting bases. Military leather sling. - s/n 23657 - C&R ffl - {tb-w567ba} - (estimate 10000 to 20000)

You can't spend it in the great beyond.
However, you might find the same rifle in a closet of some widow's house sale.

I've driven out there the past three auctions and am planning on going again this year. It gives me a nice weekend after tax season. I get to see some stuff that I rarely see. After watching the auction, I personally would never be an absentee bidder at one of these. Numerous times the opening bid on an item was very high and never moved from that opening bid. It seemed the vast majority of those were from absentee bidders. I will head out Friday am around 5:00, stop once for gas and stretch my legs and arrive around 12:30. Then I will head out after auction Saturday and stay overnight around Kansas City somewhere. Then head on in Sunday. I am not really as interested in as many of these guns as prior auctions. But, it will be a nice break. 0 -

I surely wish that GunBroker would allow one to bid a definite amount to start with. Auto bid is fine but sometimes a relatively high opening bid will win an auction for less than bidding back and forth.

I was there, bought a few guns. Jim Supicia does a good job of trying to get absentee bidders a gun at the lowest price, but that's only when he is announcing the auction. I can't stand that other azzhat, the one that says "right there it is" at the beginning of every lot. He is a real scumbag pile of excrement, and that's an insult to the excrement. He will start off auctions with the highest absentee bid. Last year he started off a run of the mill Ruger Blackhawk at $1400! and sold it to the absentee bidder at that price! Everyone just laughed at him! This year he tried to start off an SKS at $800! It was so rediculous they ended up calling the absentee bidder. He restarted it at $150 and that's what it sold for.
He gets mad at the crowd if bids don't go high enough to suit him.0 -
I was there also, but didn't buy anything. That was the 3rd one in a row of theirs I have gone to. As far as I can tell, both Supica and the other auctioneer start at what ever the highest absentee bid was. Then you got to tack on the 10% buyers premium and sales tax.
Yea bigtire, that was funny when they started that Norinco SKS at 800. The whole crowd just started laughing at them. They were so flusterd about what to do, they couldn't decide wether to sell it, skip it, or what.
