    This is totally silly. Here's what lies at the heart of the problem. Iraqis automatically think that it's automatically better if it's carried by U.S. troops. We issued Glock 19's to Iraqi Police and they wanted Berettas. What the heck. I would have swapped my Beretta for a Glock 19 in a heartbeat if the Army would let me. You'll find that an abundance of cleaning/lubricating supplies does not exist in the Iraqi police/army supply system. Now they'll be bugging GI's for weapons maintenance products. This is stupidity. I wonder which U.S. manufacturer is putting pressure on the politicos to facilitate this "swap".

    If Iraq has a depressed economy (and it does) then the last thing they need is an M16. Why the heck then is the AK-47 the weapon of choice in all of these third world countries? It's durable, reliable, powerful and cheap to manufacture and purchase. This is a DUMB move IMHO.

    BUT what AK's aren't as accurate! M16 will out shoot an AK at ranges over 100 yd.s all day long! ...One of the trade offs of opening up the tolerances in their production. Inside 100 yd.s, I'd take an AK, over M16!

    Amen brother. Iraqis pretty much just spray and pray anyways. They coined the term "Iraqi Death Blossom" just to describe what happens to Iraqi security forces when they are engaged while on patrol.

    Maybe this is morphing into a different discussion, but if I wanted an ideal patrol package it would be AKs with a couple of M-14s for backup. And the occasional bolt-action .308 for fine work. Okay, cancel that last one for the Iraqi Army.

    I think this swap is silly. The only real advantage I see is being able to better discern your allies during the confusion of a firefight. Which is why we were not allowed to carry AKs in the field 35 years ago -- and some folks wanted to!

    As for the Mauser-like loose tolerances of the AK, I believe that is essential for a true battle rifle. The M-16s tightness make it accurate, but unforgiving in sand and mud. An excellent civilian marksmanship tool.

    Looks to me like the AR-manufacturers were feeling left out of all the fun and profit to be had over there and pulled some strings to rectify that situation one time quick.

    Re-equipping a military with AR's when they're used to AK's makes little if any sense to me. It makes them overly dependent upon U.S. supplies and is a step in the wrong direction if we're really wanting to foster a self-sustaining Iraqi military.
