Many individuals have asked me where I stand on the issue of concealed carry permits -- and whether the Libertarian Second Amendment Caucus which I founded several years ago is likely to join in political coalitions with other organizations that concern themselves with Second Amendment issues.
I've put off writing about these matters before now, because it isn't easy, knowing that you're likely to alienate good friends and allies by insisting that they face hard truths. But the press of current events -- the increasingly obvious reluctance of the new Republican majority in Congress to make good on their promises to the gun owners who elected them, along with an insane eagerness on the part of nominally pro-gun organizations like the National Rifle Association to accept utter defeat on the eve of total victory -- make it impossible to put it off any longer.
As Robert A. Heinlein once observed, "The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire." To take it a step further, there are natural-born Tories in life, who only feel comfortable when they're groveling to some kind of authority, and there are individuals who won't grovel, no matter what it costs them.
This nation, America, was created by the latter sort, while the former ran away to Canada where, for the next eleven generations or so, they could comfortably grovel to kings, queens, and socialist bureaucrats. And just as some Canadians have since learned better than their Tory predecessors -- we'll be hearing more and more from them in the near future -- many descendants of those first Americans have become the very thing their ancestors fought so hard against.
Those who beg permission from the government to exercise a right they already possess are not free men and women. They're Tories; they're grovelers. They'd beg permission from the government to breathe, if they were told it was required of them. If they were told it was required of them, they'd beg permission from the government, even to grovel.
A license -- government permission -- to carry a concealed weapon is nothing but the latest kind of gun control, the latest kind of groveling. There's no way to euphemize it; there's no way to excuse it. It isn't necessary: nobody needs the government's permission to carry a weapon, concealed or otherwise. And it's illegal under the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution for government, at any level, to require it. That's right, it's illegal; and it's a primary goal of the Libertarian Second Amendment Caucus to jail those in government, elected or otherwise, who obstruct the Bill of Rights in any way.
It's also dangerous: it converts a fundamental human right into a privilege which the government may see fit to deny to anyone, for any reason, at any time is wishes. How anyone could be aware of history for the last hundred years -- especially the last fifty -- and not acknowledge this basic truth is beyond understanding.
From their public words and actions, it's clear that those who presently control the National Rifle Association -- I don't mean the duly-elected Board of Directors -- are Tories and grovelers, no matter what they claim to the contrary. Just listen to what they say if you doubt it, or read their literature. Half of it is devoted to demonstrating to their masters in the government just what excellent Tories and grovelers they are. Notice, too, the way that some of them claim lately to be "tough" -- but how they invariably reserve their toughness for individuals ostensibly on their own side who happen to disagree with them, rather than for real enemies of individual liberty and the Second Amendment.
Now those who presently control the National Rifle Association want uniform laws from state to state regulating the way Americans will be allowed to carry weapons. To get them, once again they're "wheeling and dealing" in Congress -- with my rights as the stake -- a fool's game they always lose because they're such embarrassingly clumsy amateurs, playing against the pros. Instead, they should simply demand the immediate fulfillment of Republican promises to repeal unconstitutional gun laws which could never have been passed without the cheerful assistance of the likes of "Brady Bill-Bob" Dole and Newt "Suspend the Bill of Rights" Gingrich.
As one who's fought the battle of the Second Amendment for more than 30 years -- all the while watching in unbelieving disgust as the National Rifle Association bargained away my rights through bad tactics, worse strategy, an utter lack of moral principle, and an overpowering urge to grovel to authority -- I challenge those who presently control the National Rifle Association to deny or affirm a principle put forward by the Libertarian Second Amendment Caucus as the Atlanta Declaration:
Every man, woman, and responsible child has an unalienable individual, civil, Constitutional, and human right to obtain, own, and carry, openly or concealed, any weapon -- rifle, shotgun, handgun, machinegun, anything -- any time, any place, without asking anyone's permission. If those who presently control the National Rifle Association cannot affirm this principle, then they are enemies of individual liberty who should resign immediately and leave the field forever to those Americans who can manage to remember what their country and its Constitution are all about.
If, on the other hand, they affirm it -- and publicly abandon their advocacy of anything less than stringent and uncompromising enforcement of the Bill of Rights (along with their disgraceful eagerness to accept excuses and "clever" strategies from Republicans instead of decisive and effective action) -- I'll be happy to advise the many friends of the Libertarian Second Amendment Caucus to join with the National Rifle Association in a coalition to advance the cause of individual liberty.

Lotta truth in that article, Highball.....keep it up 0 -
Thanks for that post. It is through the Second ammendment that all other rights are able to continue. 0 -
Highball, I seldom travel out of state, and because my state constitution says I have the right to open carry more places than the ccw laws will allow (and we have a shall issue ccw law) I refuse to obtain a ccw! As far as when I travel, well if I get caught, I get caught. 0 -
I've got one.
I agree with the author, and will do everything I'm able to to make it happen.
But, anybody who believes it's going to happen without an armed revolution, is smokin' wacky tabaky.

Yep,I have been saying for years CCW is gun control. Never had one never will.

That right there ladies and gentlemen is what the second amendment says. Either you believe in it or you don't. I do.

And so it shall come to pass.
Thanks for posting Highball.0 -
Fatboylives; +1. If I feel like I need to carry, I too, will do so. CCW's are clearly unconstitutional and the criminal or lunatic that one is likely to encounter in a truly life-threatening situation ain't gonna have one. 0 -
Yes, I have one...
my friend refuses to get one for the above stated.0 -
Agreed!
Every CCW permit is a nail in the coffin of the Second Amendment. Some of those Torrie peacocks will never get it, they love to lord their CCW permits over others, and many don't want the common man to be armed. Really got to laugh at the one's who think they are James Bond with their permits. I try to educate these overgrown children as I meet them, but like I said some just do not get it, or they do and they really are Evil Torries bent on destroying our "More Perfect Union".0 -
In the rural area of Maine where I live, I believe that who has a CCW (called CWP here) often is about "bragging rights". 0 -
I have the permit for both Oregon and WA states.
I agree with your passion about our second amendment rights.
I disagree about your opinion about the NRA. It does not take a rocket scientist to understand they they are only fighting a retreating action. Their flanks are being attacked each and every day and they have no support from the very gun owners that seem to relish in attacking them on this and other forums.
Again. you want three million members out of "70 million" gun owners to do all your fighting for you. That pure BS! Go to NRA-ILA and look at all the lawsuits that they have in the hopper.
I have said this several times and its frustrating to me that nobody really seems to get the "big picture!" If and when 50 million plus gun owners, hunters, and collectors decide to join a group to fight this battle, that is when things will turn around.
The NRA is not the Department of Education funded by US taxpayers. They only have the money that a handfull of members give them. It pocket change in legal circles.
"Divide and Conquer", that is working well for the antis. Because we all seem to have our little idea about how to fight the anti-gun folks. None of them will work of course because we don't have the organization or membership or funds to get it done. The NRA is by far the largest organization, it has the best chance to suceed, in my opinion.
Take the membership they have right now and triple it or X10 and then watch them kick butt!0 -
Obeying the King so as to have a fighting chance is not necessarily a 'bad' thing...as long as one understands EXACTLY why you are obeying.
Having a pistol in your pocket just might save your hide some fine day...when you are out of pocket and the King decides that the roundups might as well start today.
The lists you will go on may indeed be used to round up those clearly signaling their intent to resist agression...but if the round ups start and you are not taking evasive action...you need to go down anyway.0 -
I do believe that anyone on this forum or any other gun forum has been observed by government agencies and most likely can be tracked down faster than someone with a gun permit.
Our government will not feel threatened by people willing to get their photos taken and fingerprints put on record. They will feel threatened by individuals that talk of armed risistance to the laws put in place by congress.
Anyone that has purchased a gun through a FFL is in the files. The gun stores have to keep their records so I imagine you are already on many lists.0 -
I don't care about lists, just the evil concept that they want me to pay a $200 Tax, to do what comes naturally to me.... 0 -
Excellent post Highball.
As a career peace officer, I have always advocated the firm stance that government does not have the right to dictate how a citizen carries a firearm. Misuse it and you have issues, stay respectful and don't infringe on someone else and you are good to go, period.
In Arizona, cops are required to go through a background check when purchasing a gun, just like everyone else (what a concept[:o)]), unless they are CCW holders. My good friend and FFL holder, asks me why I don't do it almost every time I buy, or have him do a transfer of a gun "on the grid".
Many of my associates have gone and done it.
I have long spouted that I refuse to acknowledge the right to restrict. Nice to see someone formalizing the concept.0 -
The Roanoke Times, a major (ultra-liberal rag) daily newspaper, recently published a list of all ccw holders AND their address' on their website. After much public outcry, the list was removed. The list was legally obtained from the Virginia State Police! I just object to having to pay to exercise my 2nd ammendment rights AND THEN, have my name and address published in the paper! I live in a rural area and sometimes carry a 9mm with snakeshot when I go fishing or to my cabin. If I leave it in plain sight in my truck, which is legal in my state, I'm inviting someone to steal it. If I stick it under the seat, I'm a criminal. 0 -
If I carry without a CCW permit here, it's a felony. I then am barred from carrying, buying or owning a firearm b/c I'm a felon. So, I have a permit. Is it fair, no. But I'd rather have the right to my firearms and not be a felon. 0 -
You're not a criminal or felon until you are arrested, indicted and convicted. Use common sense and what's the worry? If you're dumb enough to walk through the metal detector at the court house with your weapon in your pocket, if you're dumb enough to get drunk and drive with your piece under the seat, or, if you're dumb enough to smoke dope and drive with your piece under the seat, try to cross into Canada or Mexico with your piece under the seat, then you're probably not smart enough to be armed in the first place.
There are ways to get around a background check if you want to buy a handgun or long arm. People who are intent on using the weapon to commit a crime as well as law-abiding citizens do it all the time. Has anyone ever legally purchased a handgun from a private party and then said, "Hey, Just for the heck of it let's go over to the local gun shop and let them run a background check"? I'm having a hard time thinking of a law that is more blatantly in violation of the 2nd Amendment than the so-called CCW laws. They protect nobody. Screw 'em.0 -

Wow, I didn't know that.0
