What's a good chainsaw.
I dropped my chainsaw today in the river. Seems like I'm not going to be happy til everything I own is either at the bottom of a very big lake, or bottom of a river.
Anyway whats a good chainsaw for the money. I just want a small chainsaw that's going to last. It doesn't have to be fancy with bells and whistles. It just has to cut wood. It has to be small enough to be able to be carried on an atv too.

If you're gonna keep float testing them, maybe a Homelite is best!!
I have a neighbor who HAS to have the Best of everything - a little while back, when we had a storm, everybody in our small Neighborhood turned out to clear the road - the neighbor brought his Stihl, complete with the cute case, and his gloves and visor, and I brought my little Homelite - guess who cut up almost all the deadfall on our road? Me - my chain was sharp, and I could start and run my saw...the neighbor couldn't keep his running, and when it did, the chain was dull.0 -
I bought mine as a "Refurb" for $79.00, from one of those cheap catalogs, and six seasons later, it is still going...
@ $79 per, you could afford three or four "float/drop tests" before you would have spent as much as for a Stihl or Poulan or Husquvarna, and you would have gotten four sharp chains, to boot!0 -

Around here its 30 -
STIHL and forget it they are not as high preformance as a Husqvarna but they are great saws
I have an 039 that I have been cutting with for ten years and it is still going strong I have probably cut 175-200 ricks of fire wood with it and tons of brush (general clean up)

Yeah, it gets used. That was a baby pic of it, brand new right out of the box.
Changed bars three times, been through dozens of chains and built a stainless custom set of dogs for it modelled after the 254XP that grip better.0 -
I like my Husqvarna, wife likes it also and has claimed it as "her saw" if she gets ride of me she's keeping that saw so she says. 0 -
I've been using a Stihl for about 6 years ... it is OK, but not as reliable as my old - too old - Maculloch 2-10 automatic.
I think it is worthi it to get one with a compression release ... the recoil parts on the Stihl are a bit fragile.0 -
There is a Stihl in my garage that has quit running. The Stihl I had before that one quit running.
The Echo that I bought before I bought either of the two Stihls still runs.
IMNSHO, if you are going to step up from a Poulan or Homelite discount-store POJ, you should step over the Stihl and step up to the Echo.0 -

I'm replacing all my saws with the XP (Pro series) line of saws. My 350 will be replaced with the 346xp .

Personally, I prefer Stihl but I've been using an Echo when working for another farmer. I'm impressed with the little Echo(340 or 430, I can't remember). It's light and after I tuned it a little, it starts first pull all day. Uses little fuel and according to my son, they have an excellent warranty(does not cover falling in the river). If I were buying a little saw to do some trimming and didn't want a throwaway discount store saw, I'd add Echo to my look at list. 0 -
Buy a Stihl MS250...about $300, works and works and is light but powerful. Comes with 16" bar so it's good on an ATV...but you can change to an 18" bar if you want to (it's what I have).
