A true American hero has fallen ill and his family is requesting e-mails of support they can read to this now 85 year old triple-ace-plus pilot.
Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Robin Olds began his career as a 2ndLt. flying P-38J's over Germany in 1944. By war's end he was a 22 year old Major flying a P-51 and had been credited with 12 air-to-air kills/11.5 air-to-ground aircraft kills.
Olds went on to fly 105 F-4C missions over N. Vietnam and was credited with 4 Mig kills. During his time in VN our F-105's were suffering a high loss rate against NVN's Mig-21 force over the Hanoi area, with some of these kills reportedly by Soviet advisor pilots. During one month alone these Mig's shot down 9 of our F-105's. Olds orchestrated an ambush by leading a flight of F-4C's masquerading as F-105's that resulted in 7 Mig-21 shoot downs in a single day, this when NVN only had 16 such aircraft in their entire inventory. Olds himself was credited with one of these kills.
Olds was also the flight leader of the famous low level attack on the Paul Doumer Bridge in Hanoi.
His decorations include:
Air Force Cross
Air Force Distinguished Service Medal
Silver Star w/3 Oak Leaf Clusters
Legion of Merit
Distinguished Flying Cross
Air Medal w/39 Oak Leaf clusters
Olds was recently released from the hospital and is currently resting at the home of his daughter. E-mails should be titled Support For Gen. Olds and can be sent to Dean Smith at steamboatdean@yahoo.com for hand-delivery.
