I though making distilled liquor was called moonshining. It is made from molasses or cane juice. I think you would be better off just buying your rum.

At least whiskey with the stamp was not distilled through a car radiator.

Unless you want to go to the trouble of buying all the necessary permits and jumping through regulatory hoops, Captain Morgan's or Bacardi looks pretty good! Of course, if you don't mind spending a year or so in jail and paying a hefty fine, feel free to make all you want! [:D]

I truely had no idea it was "not allowed". [V] Back to brewing I guess.

iluvguns, if you like the spiced rum you should try Rondiaz. The quality of Captain but a whole lot cheaper.

Hmmm...I just found rum kits online. Maybe I should look into the laws a little closer. [:D]

There are so many really fine rhums out there to sample, I would not want to waste sipping time brewing myself.

I believe an individual is permitted to make 200 gallons per year of "hard" liquor without penalties, taxes or fees, for personal consumption.

The head of a household can make up to 200 gallons of beer and wine, but distilled spirits must be made by a licensed facility.

Don't have a recipe but rum is made from sugar cane. My family has made syrup all my life. The skimmings of the syrup would ferment fairly quickley and if we weren't careful, the cows would drink them and get a little wobbly. Fun to watch.[}:)]

The rumen is a fermentation vat. Give a cow plenty of corn, and it will make its own shine and founder. Same with sugar cane or sorghum molasses.

If you look closely, I bet those are from other countries. And if you order one, I bet you get a visit from the BATF not long after FedEx or UPS or the USPS leaves it at your door. [:D]

Just jump on a plane to the USVI where I used to live.

1 Lt. of the Cruzan Rum made right there on the islands is less than the 1 Lt. of Coke to mix it with. Much easier this way.

80' s year around and nice green place.

Watch out for the local crackheads, all over both sides of the island.

perhaps you could do with rum what they do with brandy over there in eastern europe. I'm told the average farmer, every year, will make 5 barrels of brandy:

he'll drink 3 and put away 2 for aging

he has the 2 barrels from 5 years ago, drink 1 with guests (which can be many) and set aside the better one for further aging

he has the barrel from 10 years ago for the really good times.

so every year, he drinks about 3 barrels of that year's brandy, shares the 5 year old with guests, and once in a while celebrates with the 10 year old good stuff. = 5 barrels a year.

DON'T sell, give to minors, or let it leave the house and you'll be alright. The law has bigger fish to fry.

Advocating covertly breaking the law on a publicly read board is probably not the best plan.
