You should'nt have any problem sigs.don't have to be notarized.
you will probl. have to end up paying wash.tax and fees.

maybe the guy will meet you half way if you have the cash.

I've bought a few in Oregon and nothing needs to be notarized.
Just have him (or her) sign the title over to you.
I always get a bill of sale as well.
You will, of course, have to pay WA sales taxes and lic. fees when you transfer the title.
But I'm sure you knew that.

Yes the state will charge you the tax.
Not on what you paid for the car but on what their book says it is worth.
That was several thousand dollars more than I paid.
My bill of sale made no difference at all. They used the full book value.
Only way around it was to get estimates to repair everything on the car and they would deduct that from their book value.
Best option was to get a used car dealer to give me a written estimate on the value and they did use that.

To make it easier....if you buy from a private dealer use this http://www.odot.state.or.us/forms/dmv/501.pdf
    and
    http://www.odot.state.or.us/forms/dmv/6890.pdf
Download these pdf and print a copy out and bring with you.

What year/years are you looking for? There is a pretty nice 98(I think) Explorer at Titus Will at the round-a-bout in Lacey. They were asking 6991, but Butch (salesman we bought our expi from) said he would make me a deal. If you are interested....give him a holler. email me and I'll give ya his contact info.

We just spent 2 weeks looking on craiglist in seattle and portland for a used car. Yu are correct...we were looking for explorers as one of our choices. he portland area was alot cheaper.
We finally found a local deal in Lacey that made us a great cash deal.
There is a nice explorer in St. Helens.

Thanks for the heads up Fep, although I think we'll go a couple years older.
