msnbc crime program and 30-30 rifle

i was just watching this crime program on msnbc about a cop who was shot and killed in the line of duty in texas i think. the suspected shooter was supposed to be 217 yards away and using a lever action 30-30 winchester. the defense hired some experts like and "air force sharpshooter" and they went to a gun range. from 217 yeards they could only hit a target the size of a human head 2 out of 20 times and then a "firearms marksman" could only hit it 2 out of 14 times. i have never shot one of these guns but that sounds pretty darn inaccurate to me. are they just bozoz who cant shoot or are those guns really that bad ?

    A 30-30 (depending on the ammo) is normally rated for a 2 1/2 to 3 inch drop at 200 yards.

    They do lose alot after 150 yards. But in the 50 to 125 yard range they are great shooters!

    Was the policeman shot in the head??

    Was the test rifle scoped and sighted in??

    I'm pretty sure that I could kill a guy from 217 yards with a scoped .30-30 that I had sighted in.

    Maybe even with one with no scope.

    The .30-30 isn't renowned for its accuracy, either as a cartridge or in any rifle it's chambered in. 200 yards seems its practical limit in my experience, but a kill at 217 isn't out of the question if the guy knew what he was doing and it had a scope on it.

    Wouldn't want anyone shootin at me with a 30 30 at 250 yards. I've shot many deer out close to 200 yds.
    I would bet I could hit a man size target at 250 yds if I was sighted at that range.

    Anything is possible. Even freak accidents that are very hard to reproduce, they happen, we may not know how or why, but they happen.

    Sounds to me like a case of denial.


    Hell a 22lr is deadly at 200yds if it hit the right spot. Exactly as in this case.

    Yeah, it's no 308, but still a 30 caliber bullet, even if traveling at subsonic speeds is deadly.

    The possibility of a 30-30 round striking and killing a human @ 217yds, very likely.
    The possibility of a shooter aiming for and hitting the right eye? Highly unlikely.
    My guess was that the man was aiming to hit the officer and by chance hit him in the eye.

    Defense attorneys can prove:
    That a person would not know that hot coffe can scald you
    That a 30-30 cannot kill at 217 yards
    That OJ Simpson didn't kill his wife

    I have one ,that was manufactured in 1928-29. I can shoot 3" groups all day long at 100 yds. with "iron sights",and ballistic tip ammo.Not a tack driver, by any means, yet very effective on deer.

    I am very familiar with this case. I live close to the city where it happened, Whitewright, Texas. The Texas Ranger in the case had the most logical explanation. The shooter shot at the emergency lights, which caused the bullet drop into the patrol car. The shooter was found NOT GUILTY by a jury. He was later sentenced to fifteen-years by a federal judge in a firearm case.

    ha they are full of it. the gun JFK was shot with (allegedly) was some italian piece of crap the according to most should not have been able to make that shot, but it did.

    it is my firm belief that any gun can make any shot. the shooter on the other hand is the one who misses.

    ...I've taken deer at 200 yds with an open sighted 30-30 and had a witness to prove it. Shot it thru the heart off-hand. I use a T/C Contender in 30-30 and it shoots great for only a 14 inch barrel. I think any well accoustomed shooter that knows his weapon could make the shot.
    After all, they must have something on the jerk that made the shot to charge him!
