Construction Question

Having problems keeping a regular house door from leaking when installed in a mobile home. Want to build small porch or awning to keep rain off the door. How big does it need to be? Door is 32". I am thinking a 4X4 foot roof over the door should do it. I know an 8X8 would work but do not want to build it twice as large as necessary.

    What is the purpose of the black vinyl 18 inch hight fence I see located around local construction projects. I cannot figure what they are for.

    Mud fence. To keep water and dirt (which the EPA considers "hazardous material") on the jobsite.

    It is an erosion control barrier. It is to prevent soil erosion.

    I believe it is there to stop soil run off when it rains.

    Everyone is right...environmental reg to control runoff. Functionally it does almost nothing.

    Around here it is called a silt fence,now for a little rant.It keeps soil from running in to and clogging streams, but to install properly you dig a 6" deep trench and bury the bottom of the fence,in doing this you have disturbed soil on both sides so you get run off to the stream.Inland wetlands makes you put thisin no matter where you are going to build if you are within a certain distance from wetlands. This product was probably desiged by the ne'er do well brother in law of a politician, who ran this thru in to law so he would not have to support said B I L anymore. Inland Wetlands has not figured out that you can not stop Mother Nature, no matter how hard you try.No matter what run off will happen, the pond will turn into a swamp,the swamp to a bog,the bog to a meadow, the meadow to a forest and someone will come along and cut the trees down and build a house. And that is your lesson today on one of the stupid things the government does.

    In my line of work, they install all kinds of this stuff. Usually wrong. It is called silt fence. Sometimes you'll see it in a small box shape, where it's probably protecting an inlet until some vegetation starts growing. It is required by law and part of contracts now. They have to put it up or the EPA can slap the prime contractors with some serious fines, daily, until it is up.

    We have to fill out erosion reports weekly, and after every time it rains 1/2 of an inch now. It's a big push they're having to try and keep silt out of the streams, rivers, and mainly storm sewers.

    On the other hand, farmland is exempt from having to worry about run off or any erosion.

    It's a pretty lousy double standard but I don't know what they could reasonably force a farmer with hundreds, if not thousands of acres to do, in order to implement satisfactory erosion control.

    The silt fence doesn't work very good to begin with. If they bury it too deep, it fills with silt and the water spills over. Too shallow and the water cuts a path underneath. The stuff requires constant maintenance to work properly.
