possum termination

I've got a couple of possums I need to dispatch and since it's in town, it needs to be done quietly. I was thinking about Aguila 22s after reading a few of the other GB posts. I know Aguila won't cycle an auto, so would it matter whether they were shot from an auto or a revolver? How about a youth 22? Too much barrel?

    aguilas worked just fine in my semiauto, and I went through a bunch of them...they're underpowered, but not "quiet". I tried remington subsonics (widely available) they were not as loud as the aguilas. you ain't going to find a "quiet" .22 round (unless u go with 22 shorts or even BB caps, which need a rifle anyways) the intended purpose of the subsonics is for use with a silencer, cuz they are ...subsonic... so they don't make a supersonic crack, which is about as loud as the gun going off in the first place. the silencer does the rest.

    (btw, with normal .22 ammo, if you hit your target, you won't hear the crack 'cuz it didn't develop a supersonic crack yet, roughly 75 yards. overshoot your target and you can hear it.)

    being in the city, I betcha can't shoot off a firearm. a strong pellet gun should work.

    Squirt them with ammonia from a Supersoaker, or just pee on them.

    I have used Aguila or similar BB caps in a kids bolt action. They sound like a pellet gun, very quiet.

    I found, through personal experience, that bashing their heads in with a shove is far more effective then shooting them with a 22.

    shovels! guns! heh! my other rott jumped into a bush and grabbed one, wrapped his mouth around its chest and went ka-RUNCCH!! that thing was dead in 2 seconds. he kept chewing.

    Hey Buschmaster. My Rott did the same thing, I heard the bones breaking as he clamped down on it. He was all fired up after that. Took a while before he came down from his high.

    The Aguila Colibri is SILENT our of a rifle and very quiet out of a pistol. It will not function a semi auto. It is a 20 grain bullet with no powder only the primer. A .22 short is much louder than this ammo.

    I have shot it in town and all you hear is the click of the hammer. It is adequete for dispatching varmints at close range.

    Also, 22 shorts and CB caps DO NOT have to be shot out of a rifle.

    those ain't the aguilas I shot! never heard of those. ...hhmm, I guess I never thought about shooting 22 short and BB caps out of a revolver.

    I've used Remington and CCI .22 CB longs for years around the place and they're very effective and quiet. Good luck with your
    pesky marsupials.

    Check out the 60-grain Aguila SSS, very quiet out of a rifle! Very accurate as well, it is what we use for 50 yard bench in our contenders.

    Good luck using a .22 on 'possums, especially a low power subsonic.

    I once saw one run off after a body hit from a .41 Mag. SWC. They're surprisingly tough little critters that, pound for pound, take more killing than just about any animal I've seen.

    What catpealer says is accurate, just not real pretty.

    I certainly appreciate all the recommendations (well, most of them; don't any of you ladies own a flamethrower?). I was reluctant to fire the Colibris and Super Colibris from a rifle as Aguila says they might not make it through the barrel, but maybe that's just the lawyers talking. It sounds like some of you have and do use them in a rifle, so maybe that's what I'll do. I was also considering a pellet gun, but apparently the spring guns make a whole lot of noise. I'm glad I asked for your help and appreciate your time.

    Tough they are..Fast, they are not. If you find them at the right time, you can catch them by hand, bag 'em up, haul 'em off. Don't make no difference anyway, there will be forty more the next day..

    I saw it on another board a few weeks ago. A Guy in the same situation with firearms laws in his town.

    It's cruel, but






    Someone suggested placing the trap in a 55 gallon barrel filled with water. Enough said about that.


    Personally I 'd rather use the bullet.

    We're having a show this weekend in Houston. Based on your recommendations, I'll be looking for a pump .22 to help with possum eradication.

    If you live anywhere near a road, they will terminate themselves in short order.

    I'm a trapper and I would also recommend a trap. If you use a Conibear 110 with some peanut butter on the trigger, you will get your possum.

    Very silent and your neighbors won't know what the heck it is if they do see it. Its small enough that dogs won't be caught in it.

    Attach it to a 2x4 and lean it up against something. Guaranteed to work!! Kills them instantly.

    Probably very carefully. Know any body builders,

    The conibear trap works on squirrels too. I use this trap to keep them out of my garden and off my corn. I killed over 40 squirrels last year in defence of the garden with this method alone. There is no end in site. They make babies faster than I can thin them out.

    there are many types of Aguila 22 ammo not all will be low velocity, any cb long rifle will be quite, and sound like a pellet gun, but the result may be only slightly better than a pellet gun, and they drop about a foot at 25 yrds, if you go to almost any farm supply you can buy a live trap, and relocate them

    i have shot a few with a 12 gauge, they can be hard to kill sometimes, i darn near turned one inside out at about 7 yards once sucker got right back up

    Steel traps and a drowning stick works well...used to be able to get a few dollars for their furs. Them buggers are tough to drown though. They wrap their tails around the stick and twist all over the place.
