I was woundering if anyone can give me a break down on the Mosin Nagant. I see alot of after market parts for these and was thinking of getting one.

    Inexpensive, plentiful cheap ammo. Anyone have experience with them?
    Any negatives? What to look for to get a good shooter?

    Ok... I've shot a few of these before... but now I think I should own one.

    Of course, I'm a few years too late for the $59 specials - but I have a buddy with a FFL who will order me one at cost. Or I can haunt the gunshows, the auction side, etc.

    But... what do I look for?

    Hoping to get a shooter, would like to do minute of pie plate at 200 yards or so... am I asking too much?

    I know this may be a stretch, but this is not my rifle, and the only picture I have. Can any of you identify the variety of rifle (the one in the foreground) from this picture? I don't know enough about them to hazard a guess. Thanks.

    Just got a really nice Mosin Nagant 38 from SOG. Nice stock very blond, one of the best I've seen. For $89, you can't go wrong. As for the Yugo 24/47, kind of ugly for a handpicked one. Same story with the Turkish Mauser I bought. Just nasty looking, but a good shooter for the money. Has anyone ever tried to restore the stocks on these beasts?

    Hello, I just bought a 7.62x54 mosin Nagant
    from gun broker and I know nothing

    I'm dumb with respect to this stuff so I'm asking for education.

    I've picked up the following ideas with respect to Mosin Nagant; please fill in the blanks or correct the errors as you are able.

    1) Mosin Nagant rifles were standard military issue for some army at some point in time.

    2) The Mosin Nagant rifle has a good design.

    3) The execution of that design is variable; some of these rifles are better than others with respect to performance, and this differential is inherent to the construction of each rifle.

    4) This rifle is no longer in production.

    5) Used or surplus Mosin Nagants are readily available, cheaply, but buying one is like entering a lottery. You might get a gem, or you might not.

    I have no idea what I'm talking about. Correct me at will. I'm just looking for information.

    Hey all...just wondering about the Mosin Nagant (I think that is right). I had been seeing the name on some of the members signature line and frankly thought it was a high dollar military rifle. Now I have seen them in person and wonder what all the hoopla is about?

    Are these really any good? I saw a batch of them at a shop in the $ 100 - $ 150 price range. If they are good what should I look for when buying one? Thought this might be a cheap way to get me and my nephew into military rifles.

    Any info would be appreciated.

    Is the Mosin Nagant useful for anything besides just plinking? because I shot a friends today and it a pretty fun gun to shoot and they are extremely inexpensive. This leads me to believe that they may just be fun guns that may not be all that practical to own.

    The Mosin Nagant was first commissioned by Tsarist Russia in the 1890s. The first ones were mostly made under contract in France and, oddly enough, the United States. Later, production shifted to the Izhevsk and Tula arsenals in Russia. There are a bunch of models - Russia (and other countries) made numerous design changes during its many years of service.

    Pros - Inexpensive, very sturdy and simple, easy for barely trained conscripts to shoot and maintain.

    Cons - None really. Obviously they wont be MOA shooters, but most are decently accurate. The bolt leaves a little to be desired (such as a turned-down bolt handle and a more easily operated safety).

    Several models but only the one caliber originally.

    If you ever happen to run across one converted to .30-06 NEVER fire it, they can't handle the pressure. .308 is also a really bad idea even though it might chamber...
