Bunch of arsenal rebuilds of 91/30s, M38's and M44's have hit the market in the past year. New wood, reworked/blued metal. Look hard at the bore, and check muzzle- many have been counterbored about an inch to clean up worn rifling at muzzle. Several wholesalers are carrying for WELL under $100. Check SNs on bolt/ reciever for match. Personally I like the 38 over the 44, but it's all good.

Depends do you want a collector or shooter. Mismatching serial numbers are fine for a shooter. Check the bore out, if possible take a 54r round with you to check for counter bored. I bought one last summer, for 50 bucks, the bore was good, #'s matched, it was not cleaned, and had no finish on the stock. I cleaned it good, and put some lindseed oil on the stock, and have a great M44 with only 55 bucks in it including the lindseed oil.

I appreciate the insight. I'm looking for a shooter. I don't own any C&R-type rifles. What is the drawback of the counterbore? What do I look for to determine counterbore? I'm not familiar with the term.

Take a 54r shell with you, drop the pointy end in the muzzle end of the barrel. It should not drop but half way, or a little better than up the bullet. If it drops up to the shoulder of the caseing, its counter bored, and will effect accuracy. Stay away from counterbored.

Ids- as fatboy said. To prolong usable life of a rifle, when rifling gets worn at muzzle from poor cleaning, bore may no longer be round, but oval- the weapon may be counterbored for an inch or so- basically by running a reamer from the muzzle. Last inch will now be smoothbore, and larger diameter. Restores SOME accuracy, but indication that rifle done been rode hard and put up wet, so to speak.

Great guns. Shoot a massive fireball, kick hard. Plenty of cheap and accurate surplus out there; just make sure to clean with hot soapy water as it is corrosive, then dry and clean as normal.

$120 is steep unless Polish or East German, than its a steal.
