I seem to remember a lot of folks saying:

"If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear. They can listen in on me all day, I don't care."

Well folks, get used to not caring!

Tony Snow doesn't work at Fox, and hasn't for about two years. Neither has Colin Powell been the Sec. State for two or more years. So, I smell BS.

We've had SS numbers since the 30's, and I don't believe Russian scientists were our primary worry in the middle of the Great Depression.

Are there no limits to fear?

The program he is quoting from was in 2001.

Look at the date of the interview. 6/17/2001

It is an old interview...not something that was just done. As to its authenticity...who knows unless you can find a video clip of it somewhere.

    KSUmarksman,

Thanks for pointing that out. In fact, it was on this very forum that a ton of folks were calling me a "terrorist lover" for speaking out against this sort of thing.

And NOW they're complaining? Hell, they voted for it!

Golly gee... where have all the real patriots gone?[}:)]

If the problem is the terrorists...
HOW come they design the laws so they can be used against everybody ?

I'll still call BS because Powell isn't the type to just "slip" classified information into the public forum.

I don't much care about the date, though I did note it, I'm just amused at the interpretation of the numbers.

Here's a reminder of what some GB forum members had to say about government intrusion:

quote:So I say Hell Yes we need to do wiretaps, and we need to keep wiretapping, if that's what it takes to protect my kids and your kids and everybody's kids that need protecting in the first place.

quote:What's the big deal? Are you hiding something? Do you wear a tinfoil hat? I could care less who listens to my phone calls.

I don't think this is news to anyone. The SS number is an identification number that identifies persons with many government agencies that offer services and information. Of course, any law enforcement or investigative organization can us a SS number to track
a person or learn things about them, if they go through a proper procedure to do so. Those procedures are decided upon by law and have been for decades. Don't break the law and you won't have anyone looking for you. It's not breaking news about big brother, I am nearing 60 years old and have understood this to be the case ever since I can remember. It's just common sense to look for all the information you can find on an individual if it is your sworn duty to do so and there is documentation authorizing the search by the Justice dept or other authority whose onus it is to investigate crime or espionage.

If your neigboor is a..ahh let's say a communistlover secretly...
and you and your wify talks to him or maybe even drink some beers w him at times...Then you become a suspect and the police can tap your phone or plant bugs in your house...Surely they eventually find out your inocent. But as a spin off effect they overhear you saying you're pro guns for the people.Well sidespinn information is ofcourse also very interesting for the gov.And WILL be used against you...
Hmm and do you know everything bout what your kids do at nights ?
something fishy and your phone get tapped in your house.Or all your contacts that u frequently call.

I have my original card that was issued in 1967 but it says on the back that it is not to be used for idenitifaction purposes.

In spite of this the Indiana BMV required the number to issue me a license to drive and the U.S. Marine Corps utilized it as my service number. Indiana University used it as my Student ID...

I don't think it is "classified information" that the Social Security number is a federal ID.

    (for Talented)

    My friend,

You have a classic case of indoctrinational paranoia. Just double your efforts on your family, education, career, and the pursuit of happiness, and then it will wll work out well for you if it does for anybody, trust me. This is still a pretty damn good country, and opportunity abounds for the optimistic. God bless you.

    Frogbert.

    (for Henry)

I believe that statement on the card was referring to the card and the fact that people needing to identify the holder for business or legal purposes were not to rely upon the card in lieu of a valid source of identification such as a driver's liscense, military I.D. or passport, etc., and that the bearer of the SS card was not to present it as identification.

If they ever needed to track a person, the ssn could tell
who his/her employer was, once you have that, a good PI can find you.
so yea, if someone has your ssn, I could see you getting tracked down. as for the military, you had to have your ssn card for enlist.
so why is this a big surprise? its not to alot of us here.

I've known people who went in an odd direction when they were pregnant....and about to bring a child into the world. You can easily have a child and not participate in the whole "normal" society....but do you REALLY want to give up the benefits? School is an issue...health care....future jobs....sports and EVERYTHING are based on having a number. Its not something I am a big fan of....but I can see where it has good points. Many people would have to agree there are some people that we are glad they caught using that system.

    "the system".

    we're economic sheep.

    baaaaaa-a-a-a-a-ahh.

suuuure there's nothing wrong with being able to track down any crook using their ID number.

sure, there's nothing wrong with all the information about that crook stored with his ID number. everywhere he ever lived (and is living), everywhere he ever worked (and is working), everywhere he went to school (and is going to), every medical procedure done (and recently underwent)

every utility bill, phone bill, cable tv bill, internet IP address, driver's license, military enlistment, credit card, bank acount,

and by extension, everything he bought and store he went to using a credit card, his shopping habits, his hobbies, his lifestyle, his "mode of living", everything on his "consumer report", what kind of car he drives, when where and how far he drives it, what kind of person he is,

and by extension, his phone records, who his friends are, who his girlfriend is, who his relatives are, anybody he's talked to on a phone, anybody he's sent an email to,

suuuure. they need that information. he's a crook. you aren't a crook, I'm not a crook, but somebody is.

    FOOEY!

"Somewhere between 12 and 20 MILLION Mexicans are using fake SSNs - maybe they are putting in some money on your account! Further, that creaky old system is NOT what they will use - did you know how they found OJ while on the lam? His Cell Phone! Have you noted the missing women lately were located by their Cell Phone?

If ya wanna be paranoid about something, keep reading, I will give you the terminal shudders:

OBD II (1988?) and beyond Fuel management systems in Automobiles are equipped with Remote capabilities...If necessary, OBD III systems can be dialed up like a phone, and STOPPED! You own a newer vehicle - Hmmm? (Police departments are looking into, some even have, devices that will kill the ignition and electronics packages of modern vehicles) That 68 Chevy pickup is looking better and better, isn't it?

Nearly half (and growing) modern vehicles have some memory capacity - they can playback what gear you were in, throttle and brake position, engine RPM, and even Seatbelt use, when the accident or incident occurred. Insurance companies LOVE these.

Any GPS-equipped Cellphone will tell EXACTLY where you are...got any of those? Even the oldest working cellphones will localize your whereabouts within about 2000 feet.

Credit Card use is also tracked when they are on the lookout for someone.

I agree, OP post is probably BS.

How is this information classified? Use some common sense. Goverment track down people in all kinds of ways. Credit cards, fingerprints, SS numbers, ect, ect. I don't see how this is ground breaking info and how everyone didn't know use logic to realize it long ago.

What really freaks me out is keeping fingerprints and DNA of common citizens. SS # doesn't do all that much in my opinion unless they start tattooing it on the inside of our lip. You can always get a new one if you have to, just look at our illegal friends.

Slow down there Hoss, next thing you know you'll be dragging out quotes about how GW is destined to be one of our greatest presidents and how we should not be critical of his actions and fully support him during this time of war. Funny how that immigration bill slowed those types of comments on the boards way down.

Why don't they just have us tatoo our SSNs on our forarms?
