Indianapolis - Metro police are on an all-out search for suspects after someone murdered a young mother and wounded her infant daughter. Investigators now hope evidence, stolen from the woman's southwest side home, will help catch the killers.
Police call what happened inside the Mars Hill home appalling: A young mother murdered with her infant daughter in her arms.
"While she was holding the baby, that's what almost makes me just," said neighbor Shannon Mansfield, unable to finish her thought.
"The fact that this lady was holding her year-and-a-half-old daughter and was shot, while holding that daughter, and for that daughter to be injured in such a way is just ridiculous and these guys are cowards," said Det. Todd Lappin, IMPD.
Police say between 2:00 and 3:00 am Monday, someone ransacked the home, then shot and killed 22-year-old Asia Davis. A bullet fragment hit Davis' 17-month-old daughter, Sarah London, in the head. Investigators say the injured toddler lay there for more than 12 hours before the child's father, Davis' boyfriend, found them Monday night.
"As a parent, that scares me to death," said Mansfield.
Police say they're confident there was more than one person involved in this murder, and that the home was targeted. Now they hope a key piece of evidence taken from the home helps lead to the killers' capture.
During the murder-robbery, investigators say someone stole a large gun safe, five feet tall with gold trim, a combination lock and lever handle. It is significant because it weighs hundreds of pounds and would require two to three men to move it, say police.
"This is something that just can't be easily hidden in a backseat of a car. It would have taken a truck or van to haul this away," said Det. Lappin.
Police hope someone saw the vehicle and noticed the safe so they can find this young mother's murderers.
"I can assure you that the community, the law enforcement and all those involved will not tolerate this type of crime," said Dep. Chief Scott Robinett, IMPD.
The wounded toddler is in serious condition tonight, recovering at the hospital. Her father is not a suspect in Asia Davis' murder. Police aren't saying how many times Davis was shot, if her attackers broke in, or what was inside that safe. But again, they believe it wasn't random and that this home was their target.
Anyone with information should call Crimestoppers 262-TIPS.
