I think that whatever is legal to handgun hunt with now will be allowed in a rifle. Look in the Indiana Hunting Guide and if I remember correctley it states what cartridges are legal. The meeting that was scheduled a couple of weeks ago was cancelled because of the snow. I don't know if its been rescheduled so we'll have to wait. I don't know if they will pass the new regs as a whole or can make changes to it (ie., calibers, ect).

Henry, these charts will give you the specs on just about all shells, but you will have to scroll down a bit to get to the U.S., non metric ones.

The last I heard when I called the office, was that they had a public hearing scheduled for the next day, and I'm sure that one got cancelled by the storms. The office said they felt certain that the genuine pistol cartridges would be made legal, but that shells like the 45-70 would not be allowed.

I hope this helps a bit.[:)]

Ok, based on that chart it looks like .38 special is OK from a rifle.

I didn't know that 44 special and 38 special were the same length.

I'm hoping that Ill. does the same. I have a Ruger #3 in 44 mag that is dying to hunt deer.

So does that mean an SKS (7.62x39) could be necked up, and maybe just a little trim to beet the max length, then head after deer?

I don't think it can be an autoloading rifle.

    Single shots and levers only.

That would not be a good thing to do in cold weather. I would recommend that you refrain for now, and wait for July.[}:)]

I didn't see anything about specifications on the action in what I read.

It seems unfair to not allow the Ruger .44 autoloader or the Timberwolf pump rifles.

The proposal has been there for some time now, but it had not passed as of the last information available.

There is very little chance that the high power guns are going to be legal in Indiana in the near future. The general consensus is that far too much of the state is just too flat to allow firearms with that kind of range, and I'm not sure that I'm in total disagreement on that issue.

I live on and own a farm and have had several occasions where bullets have come close to us and I have had to replace a couple of panels in my shop where a couple of 7.62's went through. I have a neighbor who had some slugs go through the front door of his pole barn and ruin some panels on a $6,000 door. Some folks just don't care for that.

I never have understood how the .35 Remington in a Contender or Encore slipped in under the "handgun" rules.
