Is anyone as foolish as I am?
While eating lunch today, I was thinking about the guns that I have given away (yes, for free) last year. The gifts were primarily to family members (cousins, uncle, unoffically adopted grandson). The list reads like this:

Thanks guys. Love your humor. Now for the rest of the story. When I was young (a long time ago), my father's two youngest brothers were more like big brothers to me than uncles. The youngest has passed on, but the other (Claude) is still alive (76 yrs old). He gave me my first handgun (S&W M&P 38 spl). Hunted and shot with those two uncles for many years.
The one uncle who is no longer with us had twin boys. As they grew, they also hunted with uncle Claude. In the past Claude, during an extended hospitalization, did not think that he would recover. He gave to family members (not me) all of his remaining guns. He did recover but for the past few years has lived with NO GUNS. Last year he received a 30-06, a 12 ga, a 357 and a 38 (and a 22 revolver that I forgot). Now he has guns.
Because their father was special to me, I gifted to the cousins a 41 mag Ruger and a Springfield 1911. (the cousin that received it killed a javalina with the 41 earlier this month)
All of the remainder of the gifts (except the Marlin 22) went to my unofficially adopted) grandson. He is in college and likes to hunt and to shoot. The Marlin 22 went to a youngster (unrelated) for his first gun.
To be honest my reflection at lunch had no remorse. I hope the guns mean as much to them as some meant to me when I received them. [:)][:)]0 -
Only gave away one gun in the past year, unk[;)]. A somewhat rare .22 that I gave to my eldest son. 0 -

I didn't give any away but I got one, my mom's companion gave me a Star Model F .22 "New" in the box, he purchased it overseas when he was in the military, the writing on the box looks like Italian.He had never fired it (had it for defense 
, also had two boxes of mostly dud ammo ( I tried to shoot them) anyway he knew I collected guns and gave it to me, really special I tried to offer him money but he insisted. Really nice guy, unfortuneately he passed on, so I will always keep this gun just for the sentimental value.0 -
...Never gave it much thought, but wow, I've given away quite a few. Anytime someone needs a first gun for a kid, I always find something to give away. A couple Marlin .22 single shots, a Marlin 60, a Stevens pump shotgun, a .25 auto in a GB giveaway....etc.
...On the other hand, I've received a SxS 10 ga double, a Stevens Visible Loader and some other freebies from friends. What goes around, comes around......[:D]0 -
I've given away one gun in my life and I bought it for just that purpose.
Long story short: my academic adviser told me I could hire an undergrad to help me with field work for a summer and that he (adviser) would come up with about $1000 to pay this guy. And the adviser let me down...never came up with the $$$. The work this guy did was worth about $5000 at reasonable wages, but he was also getting academic credit for helping me and was never promised more than $1000.
To his credit, the undergrad was nothing but gracious about the whole affair. Still, I felt like a major azzhole. I had introduced him to guns, so I figured a gun might represent some small attempt to right the wrong.
I bought him his first gun: a .22 bolt action rifle (don't even remember what kind, but it was a pretty nice one). The value on that was about half what he'd originally been promised. The look on his face when I gave it to him was incredibly gratifying. By the time I gave it to him he had moved away but was back in town visiting....and helping me with more research work!
I still count him as a friend and am in touch with him. The rifle didn't seal that friendship; it just made me feel like less of an azz for having him work for me for nothing....when he had been promised something.0 -

Most of the ones I'm reading about here, have been given to family members or friends.
I'm going to bring up the names of a couple of guys that give them away to people they have never even met.
While there have been MANY "single +" firearms given away by members here, the king(s) of this category would have to go to either juju or aglore.
I wouldn't know which has given away the most, considering they have done so on other forums as well. But the list of guns that have been given away between these two men is....extensive. Their generosity never ceases to amaze me.

Seriously, just called old uncle Claude. Told him about this thread. He laughed & laughed. If he is still able in Oct., I am gonna take him to the Y O ranch in South Texas & we are going to hunt. Just picked up a brand new Ruger M77 ultralight in 257 Roberts from gunsmith. He mounted the Nikon 2x7 ( I could have if I had taken the time) and a timney trigger on it. All I need to do is sight her in, & Claude is set. ( the reason for the necessity of the 257 is another story)

Al Glore gave away a Ruger M77 MkII limited edition in 35 Whelen. I won it.
It's just not a caliber that I had any use for here in the cornfields of Indiana. He went to all the trouble to ship it here from Alaska and I sold it on the auction. The guy that won was in Hawaii.
I've always felt kinda bad about that, sorry Al.0
