Some pics from my camping trip
Got back Sunday from 5 days of camping. Went to Buck Horn State Park in Wisconsin. Had a great time off. Built a fire twice a day, saw 3 Bald Eagles while canoing, also saw 2 Osprey -- didn't have the camera, did some hiking, and got to use the 4x4 a little.
I wish I would have taken more pics but here's some.

Got to do a little 4x4ing on some ATV trails that were in the surrounding area. It was hot and dry so pretty much stayed in 4 high the whole time. Couldn't get the truck muddy. [V]

One of the days we went to another state park in the area --- forget the name of it and looked at Indian rock paintings. On one of the elevated peaks in the area. Saw some sort of Hawk -- supposedly a Turkey Vulture.

We went up on top of here to get a better look around.

Overall I had a great time. Makes really want to move out of the suburban trap that Illinois is.

Funny thing we brought 2 coolers with us, one for food, and one for beer. We spent all of $8 on both coolers at a garage sale. One was an old rusty on the outside, green Coleman metal cooler and the other was a plastic Thermos brand cooler. The Coleman cooler kept the food cold and Ice frozen all 5 days. The beer didn't fair as well. What was left of it by Saturday was room temperature. Still tasted good.
We had to bring all of our own water in for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. I brought in 2 Aquatainer 7 gal water containers. They worked perfectly. Also I was really amazed by how well my Coleman dual fuel single burner stove worked. Boiled water up perfectly.
I brought way too much food. Brought hamburgers, hotdogs, canned food, and Mountain House freeze dried meal packets. We found the Mountain House to taste really good and to be quick and easy. Next time I'll bring more Mountain House and less perishable food.
Final thoughts on the trip and area. I think I saw one other Nissan vehicle the whole time we were up there. Majority of the pickups on the road were Ford, Chevy, and Dodge. Seemed like all the foreign vehicles were from IL.
We went and checked out the surrounding state parks and county campsites. We had the best campsite around. There was a 200yd hike into the woods from the parking lot to our site & 4 others. All the individual sites were spread out. The other nice thing was that there were only 50 campsites in 4600 acres. Our nearest neighboring site was some distance off through the woods. The other campgrounds we looked at were awful in comparison, with people basically on top of each other.0 -

...I love camping too. I know a spot down in Bastrop Texas that is all pine trees, and the tent spots are all secluded by pine trees from one another...very nice for a pretty big popular park.
If you want seclusion, and like High Desert country... south of Alpine Texas is Elephant Mountain Management area...have to put in for a darwing to get in/on for either deer, or Havelina hunts...and you acrue points if you consecutivley put in for the drawing each year...you will eventually get drawn for the mule deer hunt. Almost Always get drawn for a Havelina hunt though!
SUPER BIG and BEAUTIFUL Mulies!!! Biggest I ever saw was a 14-16 pointer...and of course I was there on a Havelina hunt, so could not shoot it. Ive seen TONS of 10-12 pointers, the place is lousey with big Mulies! Few years ago when I was there for a Havelina hunt...a deer hunter shot a 17 point mulie the week before...he shot it after being there a whole HOUR [:0][:D]
Its worth the $40 (per person) bucks for the 3 day hunt for the Havelinas just to go there and go camping, it's awesome! You have to carry everything in, NO facilities...and of course carry everything out. Have to be prepaired properly too, not for the inexperienced "weekend" camper; for the hunts are in late Nov-Jan...and one day it can be 7 below with ice/snow, and the next day 40 degrees, I love it! Some black bear, Big Horns..that I was frtuanate to help them release several years ago...a gift from CO., some very big mountain lions too. One night we had one circle our campsite for hrs...far enough away we could just see his eyes w/a spot light, but found his circling tracks the next day.
....You find handprint paintings on rocks made by the Commanches, firepits still w/burnt wood still in them, arrow heads and other impliments...of course all that is WAY off limits to pick up, good thing. The Commanches used the area for their winter or summer hunting ground, forget which...but it is beautiful!
You could shoot an MLRS, main gun on a M1A1 battle tank in any direction and not hit anything, except maybe a Mulie [:D] it is in the middle of no where, nice! If you climb to the top of Elephant mountain...you can see all the way south to Big Bend National Park about 70-90 miles away, awesome place too!
The air out there is so clean and clear w/o any light pollution...when it is dark, it is DARK, honestly cant see your hand in front of your face...you can just "feel" it. The McDonalds observatory is about a 100 miles NE of there because of the clarity of the air and no light pollution.

Anyone that likes seclusion, high desert country should contact TP & W and get the info on applying for the hunts, hell, you dont have to even hunt if you dont want too...the camping is well worth the trip!
Very rugged country...if your energetic you can find lots of artifacts and walk where the last person walked was probably an Indian.
...TP & W will send you an app. and you list 3(4?) names, and info about each party...and yes, they will do a DPS quick-check! So...if you are a criminal w/warrants by returning the app. you just got caught [:D] You dont have to pay until and if you get drawn for a hunt, the hunts are for 3 full days. We always go a day before and stay in a motel in Alpine about 50 miles north...get rested up before the hunt...and eat some outstanding Tex-Mex!
Marfa is about 25 miles or so west of Alpine, beautiful little town!
Google Marfa Lights Ive seen them every time we went on to Marfa at night to look for them...I have NO idea WTH they are, but they're there! Really neat whatever they are, arent ANY manmade light of any kind, I gaurantee it.
...From where you pull off the Hwy to look for/at the lights, its about 30 miles across the desert floor to where the lights appear; along the base of the Chiante Mountains. They do all kinds of "things"...appear as one light then split in half and move in opposite directions FAST. The speed of them moving from left to right on the horizon has been estimated to be over 17,000 mph to cover the distance as quick as they do. The lights break from one, into three, they move toward you, it's crazy!
Bright white, white blue green, and white blue at times...beats me!
Great looking trip, again....makes me want to start planning my next nice camping trip...[^][:p]

Sounds nice! As we were packing up Sunday heard some shots, thinking small game hunting must've started while we were up there. 0
