Parts Kits
If i were to buy an AK parts kit, would i just need an underfolder receiver?(because underfolder what i want) My bro was telling me i have to pop some pins out and install the barrel the receiver and he said its to hard. Im pretty handy!

Hey I havn't been on here in a long time. Like 2+ years. What happened to all the parts kits? I know all about the ban and all. But you'd think there would be some folks who'd trickle them out from time to time. I did a search and turned up zilch. I've got several nice kits I'd like to put up for auction; but when I saw no returns on my search I actually got to thinking that perhaps there'd been some sorta ban by gunbroker. Always thought it would be fun to make a gun from parts (particularly an older one that gets a premium price if bought from a collector). Example: Right now there are a couple of different parts kits for the Uzi,minus the receiver -- and also separate sources for an Uzi receiver. Could I do this from a manual or is there welding involved? What are the easiest legal assault/defense type weapons to make from a parts kit? (To get my feet wet on an easier project....)

No, you will need to spend about $60 on "compliance parts."
It may take some tools like an air hammer or modified bolt cutter but it isn't too hard if you're handy.
Most kit AK's are on a stamped receiver. The barrels are pressed into the front trunnion. Seems that the web way to build is to buy a numbered, transferrable receiver (and you can sell the rifle at a later date) or build on a flat or 80% receiver (which you cannot legally sell).
There is some difference of opinion on the need to press the barrel out of the trunnion. One guy here built one without pressing his barrel out of the trunnion by air hammering the rivets against the barrel.
If you are buying a Yugo underfolder kit it can be built on a standard receiver as long as you can duplicate the cuts from your rear receiver stub into the new receiver. Also, to legally build an AK from a kit you need to replace 6 original imported parts with US made parts http://www.tapco.com/section922r.aspx . Favorites among the kit builders here are barrels, Trigger, hammer, sear, pistol grip, gas piston, muzzle attachment, stock and foregrip. If you're talking a Yugo kit you probably will need a new barrel.0 -
SAFETY ALERT - Even if you don't press out the barrel you should get a set of go & no go guages for whatever caliber you have(7.62 or 5.45). Those parts kits might not have matching bolts and barrels. 60 bucks is cheaper than facial reconstruction. Brownells has them and get both go and no go.

Be sure when buying a kit, your getting parts from a sheet metal rifle and not a milled receiver one. A couple of years ago Sportsman's Guide was advertising a russian kit as Sheet metal and it was milled.
Also look out to see if your buying a Yugo kit which requires a "Bulged receiver" for the front trunion.0 -
