Rock Island 1911
Saw it today, much better than any Chinese made piece of crap I have ever seen, I want another and dual shoulder harness. Need a couple dozen mags as well.

The Taurus 1911 thread got me thinking about a Rock Island 1911 again. I've had 2 dealers tell me how great these are, and read only good things about them, but I don't know anyone who owns one. I'd like to hear some personal experiences GBers have had with the Rock Island 1911s.

I know of one guy (not GRD) who's VERY happy with his.....after replacing about $160 worth of parts and putting a few hours into tuning it (he's an amateur gunsmith). He's pretty picky about his guns, though.
I've seen his and it looked/felt VERY nice. I've never fired one, though.0 -
Cant really say anything good about mine. It has hung up several times with the factory mag. Same ammo shoots in my SIG 220 just fine. Maybe if I polished the ramp a little it would stop jamming. But it really isn't worth the time even fixing it. It's now located in the back of my safe somewhere. The price on them is great but the quality just isn't there. GRD will have a different opinion and I respect that.

I have 7 of them (2 standard GI's, 2 midsized 4", 2 compacts, 1 Tactical) and all have been flawless right out of the box.
2 of those 7 are now at over 8500 rounds through them and even lack signs of much wear at all.
Of those who I have heard that did have problems (like forkliftking described) the problem went away with a 500 round breakin shooting standard FMJ ammo.
I use my Rocks as daily carry guns and have no problem with putting that much depenability in them.
Rock's are also fully upgradeable useing most any aftermarket parts (most of the parts will be drop in and need little to no fitting). I totally redid one of my midsized 4" models useing all Wilson Combat SS parts. I was not haveing any problem before I rebuilt this gun, I only wanted to dress it up, and figured that since I had it down that far that I would go all the way and redue the whole gun.
Another great thing with the RIA's is thier customer service! The higher ups at Armscor/RIA are great people and will stand behind the liftime warrentee that they have on thier products and will make things right if there ever is a problem.

Ivan, Ray, and several other higher ups from the company also post on that other forum and are allways will in to answer questions and concerns there or by phone (Ivan is the national rep and you can get him on the phone with ease when calling! I have talked to him several times on the phone to just ask genral questions) or email.
Bottom line is I highly recomend thier guns. I feel they are the best bang for the buck and can be put right there even to the likes of Colt, Kimber, Springfield, and the likes as far as dependability and accuracy.0 -
My brother owns one and is very happy with it. It's very reliable and the price can't be beat.

A friend of mine I used to shoot daily with has one. I remember the day I showed up and he had it. I was like what the hell is that. He told me and I was like, never heard of them. This was four years ago know. I ask how much he paid and at that time he got it for under four hundred dollars. I thought for sure this was going to be the biggest turd he had ever bought. I had a Full Size Kimber at the time. We went out back with half a case I just got from ammoman.com and we plugged away. In two hundred and fifty rounds he had two failure to feeds, In my two hundred and fifty round i had about three times that many stove pipe. The next day we finished off the case and got back on the internet to order more ammo. Since that first day I have been there for basically every round that went through the R.I. and have never witnessed another failure to feed, a jam, stove pipe, or any other problem. Can't say the same for the Kimber which I got rid of before I moved. He has not shot as much since I moved due to ammo prices and the fact that we where shooting buddies. I have been wanting to get one for myself but can't do it due to my current finacial situation lately. Once I make it out of my little rut I am in you can bet a Rock Island is going to be in the safe and tucked away in the range bag every weekend. 0 -
I should add to my original post ( I was half asleep ):
I am not sure which model you are looking to get in a RIA, but if you think you are going to want bell a whistles on it (ie: hammer, trigger, beavetail ect) spend an extra $100 and get a Tactical model rather than a GI model.
On the one that I rebuilt with Wilson Combat parts it cost me $250 just for parts and that was a a discount.
So the $100 is worth it if you want those upgaded parts.0 -

Reloading that much ammo will occupy your time. Let me know how it works out. I was thinking of getting into reloading myself. A few people I talk to says it costs about the same as new stuff but you get better/more consistant loads.0 -
I am right there with GRD! I have two of the GI's(bought one new, other from friend in $$ trouble) and LOVE them to death. I have never had any feeding probs and I think I have shot just about everything out of them, I figured I would have trouble with the Hungarian MFS Hp's since they short-feed in everything else, but Nope! I have been eyeballing a compact too. I haven't really thought about the Tactical yet, since I am happy with the GI sights( can still pound the crap out of a 2 1/2gal. jug a 100yds) but I will probably end up with one. I would take an RIA over a springfield any day!

The tactical is not a big deal unless you want the bells and whistles on your 1911.
Internally they are about the same except the tactical comes with a full length guide rod.
But if you went to buy the hammer, beavertail, and trigger alone you will spend more than the extra $100 that you pay for the tactical over the GI.
Also the tactical has a standard Novac cut sights which makes it less troublesome to change your sights.
Now in the $600 range RIA has thier match pistol that they just came out with a few months back. It is pretty much the same as the Tactical except it has adjustable sights and is completely hand fitted for all the parts.
That is the one I am hunting for a deal on now.[;)][:D]0 -

The match pistol is actually suppost to be a fine pistol by all the reviews I have seen.

very tru. i have never owned one. i have shot them and found them to be of average fit finish and reliability. not great, not terrible. average. to take that as your foundation, then spend all the time and money tricking it out, will net you a great shooter. not an excellent shooter, or a championshipship shooter mind you, but a great shooter. which, if a person were on a budget, might be just dandy and whos to judge. but for a truely excellent, match grade pistol, you need to start a little higher up on the food chain. im not bashing rocks. im saying for what they are theyre pretty good but putting 20 grand worth of accesories on a honda civic and you still have a honda civc 0 -
Being in an unbiased state of mind, owning a Springfield, Colt, and Rock Island. With money as no factor I would have to say I would purchase another RIA before the others. Yes I can get the others in much prettier finishes, but I have never been much on that. I will buy other Colts and Sringfields as the chances(and money) arise, but it is for certain that I have not wasted any money or time on my RIA's. And as far as the people that have had trouble with them, I'm sorry, but as with everything, you always end up with a bad apple sometime in your life, trust me I know. I have had 2 Rem. 700's in 223Rem. that came with the throats way over cut from the factory, I'm talking with hanloads I had to use VLD's seated to an OAL of 2.60" plus to even get them to touch the rifling. With regular and lighter bullets there was over half an inch of "Jump" and this was brand new factory barrel. Sorry off topic, just saying there are always bad apples.
bhale187, All of the 1911's mentioned by all of us are nice. And from the ones I have shot, Taurus's aren't bad either, but in my opinion, Rock Islands are definately worth it!0 -

I honestly thought they were a US production until I started doing some more research today. I am starting to sway back towards saving up a little longer and getting the Kimber Pro Carry II.

I have both the Pro-Carry and Ultra-Carry. IMO there is not a better total value out there than Kimber, and you are supporting U.S. craftsmen to boot.0 -

Ha! If you are worried about RIA's be of non-US origin look into some of the other Big Name companies that are oh so popular and look where their parts are coming from, just cause the are assembled and sold in the US by a Company that has an office address stamped on the firearm doesn't mean they were made in the US.
Trust me fellas, it's the same with the engine business! Next time you look at a Cummins engine(Heck any engine for that matter) look at all the different parts on the engine and see where they come from. It's still built in the US and sold in the US!0
