TOKYO - A giant bluefin tuna fetched a record 32.49 million yen, or nearly $396,000, in Tokyo on Wednesday, in the first auction of the year at the world's largest wholesale fish market.
The price for the 754-pound (342-kilogram) tuna beat the previous record set in 2001 when a 445-pound (202-kilogram) fish sold for 20.2 million yen, a spokesman for Tsukiji market said.
"It was an exceptionally large fish," said the official, Yutaka Hasegawa. "But we were all surprised by the price."
The massive tuna was bought and shared by the same duo that won the bidding for last year's top fish: the owners of Kyubey, an upscale sushi restaurant in Tokyo's Ginza district, and Itamae Sushi, a casual, Hong Kong-based chain.
Reporters thronged Hong Kong entrepreneur Ricky Cheng after his big win, which reflects the growing popularity of sushi around the world, particularly in Asia.
"I was nervous when I arrived in Tokyo yesterday, but I am relieved now," he said after the auction, which began shortly after 5 a.m.
The giant tuna, caught off the coast of northern Japan, was among 538 shipped in from around the world for Wednesday's auction.
The record-setting price translates to a whopping 95,000 yen per kilogram, or about $526 per pound.
Japan is the world's biggest consumer of seafood, with Japanese eating 80 percent of the Atlantic and Pacific bluefins caught. The two tuna species are the most sought-after by sushi lovers.
Fatty bluefin _ called "o-toro" here _ can sell for 2,000 yen ($24) per piece at high-end Tokyo sushi restaurants.0 -

It was getting very old but it don't matter anymore. He doesn't post anymore and we are not supposed to mention his name so we are much better off without the redundant drivel.0 -

Yes, and that is the reason this thread is inherently meaningless...0 -

It seems all they do is (and I am guessing) is sit at home, or browse the net on their fav subject, and that is all they ever post...is their life that boring?...time to get the blinders off,...there is a whole world out there just waiting for ppl to join in....Life is to damn short to sit on the sidelines obsessing about one thing ....0 -

Raise the PG to 18.0 -
I would feel very very comfortable letting my child read a gun auction site forum....My daughter was raised with a healthy attitude towards guns...she hunts, fishes and does all the things I did as a kid.... 0 -

Now then, read your post, take a good look at your own posts as this is not the first one bitching about what other people post or do, and think maybe it's "time to get the blinders off,...there is a whole world out there just waiting for ppl to join in....Life is to damn short to sit on the sidelines obsessing about one thing ....". Not that I care what you or anyone else does with their free time. I obviously waste a lot of it myself.0 -
Would I feel comfortable having my kids browse a gun auction site? Well since some of my GRANDKIDS are old enuff to vote- why not? And my shooting partner is my youngest granddaughter. If I can trust her with a firearm, why not trust her to look at guns here? May even give me a chance to get her grubby little paws off my Ruger Standard Auto, so I can shoot it for a change. [:p] 0 -

Raise the PG to 18.
This brings to mind one of the last 'dates' I attempted..several years ago. Before I gave it up as a lost cause.
Well into a nice steak (notice how I always fixate on 'steak' when I discuss eating), the discussion turned to 'guns'( again..another fixation)..the proper use of them, training, ect.
I mentioned that I prefer training younger children..that a ten year old is FAR easier..and retains instruction better..then 18 or 20.
Her retort was swift.." OH...So YOU ARE TRAINING THEM HOW TO BE GANGSTERS, HUH ?"
I nearly choked to death right there. When I regained my composure..I asked her to please explain what she meant ?
Seems she felt that children taught to shoot were BOUND to go out and shoot...someBODY..that training OUGHT to be conducted..if at all..at 20 or 25.
I simmered for just a moment..then called for the check, thanked her for coming out, and excused myself. She followed me to the door, demanding to know just what was wrong, anyway..and was mightily insulted when I explained that I was a 'gunman' (gasp) and intended wasting no more of my time...or hers.0 -
highball....excellent response to the situation but i will bet she still doesn't comprehend her own ignorance 0 -
Sometimes it is better to give up ,,, 0 -
I have found in life, that people complain about others close in contact to themselve (without MENTIONING names), point out all the faults they see with them, mostly to make themselves feel better about self.
Which reminds me of another saying, "Don't tell me about my splinter, when you have a 2x4 stick in your eye".
I guess there is a "mother hen" in every group. Who else would dictate manners and direct conversation without the Hen?0 -
