need help with gun safe
Yea, yea, yea, I know! And yes I read the past posts. Her is the thing I have 10 rifles (5 scoped and 5 iron sites) and 8 hand guns and in the near future ill probaly add 2 more rifes. Also want room for important paper work about 3 good size phone books worth and a
shoe box or two worth of my wifes jewlery. I have about $1200 to spend on this,that would include delivery. Im in the country and not in the city. My main concerns would be kids and fire. I would also like to know the best inside layout. My area is heavy woods next to a creek and 7 miles from the ocean.
Things I know:
bolt to garage floor
golden rod
Things I dont know:
elivate off floor?
inside layout?
size needed?
electonic or manual combo?
And of course make and model!
Any info and help ? THANKS!!

Stack-on makes some nice metal cabinets for a good price. Good locks. Models for 8 to 16 guns for about $125 to $300. Got mine a Dick's SG on sale for a lot less. They will keep the kids and most all thiefs out. They are not fire proof. You can bolt these to the floor, wall and other gun cabinets. Do raise it off the floor. I have 4. Jim 0 -

You are in Calif & need a state approved safe, correct?
Looked up Costco.com, with curb delivery.
The spec's are good fireproof, waterproof, etc..around mid $1,300
But I live in Oklahoma and have 3 of the Cannon 16gun units, non fireproof safes, with "manuel" combo.
Belive I paid around $600 for the first one, over 20 years ago. The last was around $825,?? in 2000.
Then added sheetrock "firewall" to the insides for fire protection.
Orginaly had the digital combo, but it took a dive after about 2 years, and was changed out to a "manuel" combo.
Which I like better, no batteries to miss with.0 -
Thanks, I was looking at a local shop that has a GSX 824 Stack on elite for $800 and the will deliver for $50,what do you guys think of this deal, also the ironic thing is I just walked down to get my mail and got catalogs for Fort Knox, Cannon and Browning safes!LOL 0 -
I am one of those who think you get what you pay for and would suggest that you look at Fort Knox or a safe in this quality range. Your price is close to the smaller size Protector series.
They will move your safes for life for $50 each time. Have the machine crawlers that climb stairs. Their bolt sizes and fireproof tolerence is rated very high. That said you can find some good deals at cosco on sentry, cannon and cheaper brands.
I had stack on and Homak for years, thats all I could aford but they can be defeated with a crowbar if the home invader has the time to play with them.0 -

elivate: is your garage heated? if no put a pice of carpit doun under to protect if from the floor
size need: as big as you can get.....
electonic / manual: electonic its fine, and alot fast to get in to if your in a hurray,

Manual comb.
Raise more than just carpet thickness off the garage floor. The garage floor will wick moisture right up thru it and thru the carpet and rust the bottom of your safe. I would think raise on some treated 2X4, or 2X6 and bolt down.
Buy as big as you can afford, it will fill up much, much, much faster than you think.
As far as this link goes, just use it for info and pics on the models. I personally don't know this distributor, just googled "Franklin 50" and this is what I found.

And on the inside layout question, get a safe that is tall enough, I would think 6'. Then put in a shelf a foot or so off the floor inside the safe. Place all your valuable paperwork below this shelf. Even in a fireproof safe the interior of the safe will get above 350 degrees pretty quick. This is the temp. at which paper spontaneously combusts. If you put the papers at the bottom it will add quite a bit of time before they burst into flames.

OK just got off the phone with A.G.English and im going between two models in the Cannon series, the Traditional series model #T36 or the Patriot series model #P40.

T36..$1921.00
Includes frieght and curb side delivery. Im leaning towards the T36 but the only real difference is the fire rating one at 30 minutes the other at 60 minutes, is the extra 30 minutes worth the extra

No, the suggestion to add sheet rock to the area outside where the safe will be at should add that extra 30 min of fire resitive protection for a lot less than $ 743.00 you'd get between the diff models.

Safes ain't gonna protect your guns in a hot house fire, ask any insurance adjuster, they open up like a tuna can in extreme heat!!0 -
Check out Gander Mountain and Dunhams. Decent selection at both.
I would suggest somthing over 750 lbs. Big enough to be hard to haul out by less than 3 people.
But you could haul it in a pickup or suburban. Invite 4-5 friends and get an appliance dolly. It's not too hard if you've got some help.
I don't like the garage idea. Too much of a temperature change from day to night. You will get condensation. Also, garage is ususally not very secure and a couple of guys could back a vehicle right up to it. If it is hard for you to get into your house, it will be much harder for the bad guys to get it out.0 -

Be sure to check on delivery also. I bought mine from a dealer that also provided delivery and set up. I decided not to put mine in the garage so I had it put in the house. I had to make a ramp to get it up the couple of steps from the garage to the dining room area. Then I had another ramp to make to get it up on the landing to get it into the room I wanted it. I then had to take the handles off to get it through the door in my room. They brought it to the house on a 2 ton truck and used a small crane to lift it of the truck. There is a threaded hole in the top near the door that they put a huge eye bolt to lift it. It then took 5 big guys to move it in the house. I had to also go under the house and support the floor with blocks. 0 -

Sounds like it woulda been easier to move into the safe.[;)][:D]0
