Growing Horseradish

OK, BR's post got me thinking about this. Does anyone grow it? I've had some in the garden for about 3 years now. I know it's the root that I'm after but can I dig and cut just a portion or do I need to harvest the whole plant?

  Take half the root and plug it back in the ground. Thats what I do, Pill/ Sow bugs are the worst enemy. Like any root it will take off given sun etc.
