At some point in time, one must differentiate between "old NASCAR" racing(good), and "new NASCAR" racing (not so good).
I think maybe that turning point was when they put restrictors in the carbs, or maybe when Hemis were banned.
A case could be made for the transition being when all the cars became jellybean cars. Or maybe when it became typical for less then 5 drivers being killed per season.

Try driving one of those cars at professional pace for 20 laps,then try it for 400-500 miles, then try it with 43 other cars around you, then talk about how easy or boring it is.[}:)] I can tell you, the guys in those cars earn their money every week. When I drive the cars at Dover, after the first 20 laps, everything under my fireproof suit is soaked in sweat from the 125-140* temps inside the car, and I am not running in traffic.
Want to talk boring, lets talk golf or baseball,..now THAT is boring.[xx(]0 -
I'm sure it's far from boring if you're behind the wheel. I find nothing entertaining about watching NASCAR, golf, or baseball. To me they are fine participant sports, but not much as spectator sports. 0 -

Brian France with the help of Gary Nelson has ruined NASCAR. BORING!!! THe Car of Tomorrow is mor like the Car of The 80's. Dale Earnhart's death was only an excuse for NASCAR to institute a universal body style. There are no safety improvements in this car. THere are several safety liabilities with this body, plus the races are boring.

really? last couple Races I watched were like the WWF . Houndreds of Fans were throwing their beers and other debris out on the track when they didn't like the outcome. There was on "rubbing" incident that lasted a quater of a lap. and at least ten crashes.0 -

I had the chance to drive a retired one year off Winston cup car belonging to Bobby Allison in 1990. I got to drive it at about 135-140 around Charlotte MSW for about 30 laps (about 45 miles). Way slow and way short compared to the real racers. Was on the track with only 4 other cars and it seemed crowded.
It was extremely HOT and LOUD, and mentally/physically exhausting. My forearms were sore the next day, not from turning the wheel, but from gripping it with a death grip. I kept having to remember to breath.
You want a thrill, go down the front stretch at Charlotte at speed bumper to bumper and door handle to door handle. Then call me about road courses and right turns.
It is certainly not a sport for the faint of heart.0 -
