    When I was at Berkeley you could still buy gasoline for 28?/Gal./Reg. at Hudson Stations.

    I believe, distilled water and gas were about the same price/Gal.[:D]

    Sure, with all this anti-polution crap on a vehicle we get half the MPG
    whith half the polutiing. Doesnt make sense to me. Leave off the anti-poluting and mileage would double per gallon.

    Not so. Computer controlled timing and electronic fuel injection have made it possible to get good MPG and good performance to go with it.

    My 2000 Silverado, loaded with options and weighing in at close to 5,000 pounds, with 290 CI V-8 engine, gets right at 20 MPG, with good performance and no ping. Computerized and fuel injected.

    My 1974 Ford F100, with no air, no power, no nothing, and a 240 CI 6 cylinder engine, got 16 MPG on its best day. It had a carb and mechanical timing.

    My 1977 Datsun pickup, 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine, without even a radio, was uncomfortable to ride in and got 25 MPG. It had a carb and mechanical timing.

    I eventually replaced it with a 1991 Chevrolet S10, much heavier, with air, power, and other options, and a V-6 engine, that got 27 MPG. It had computerized ignition and throttle body fuel injection.

    Find any car or truck of a vintage that had no "anti-pollution crap" on it, in like new condition tuned to original factory specs. Now let's find a brand new vehicle of similar size, weight and engine displacement, with similar power options. The new one will out-perform the old one in every way, HP, ET, top end, MPG, 0-60, you name it.

    My final written thesis report in automechanics in 1973 was on fuel injection and turbocharging. I told the class F/I would be the future. They all laughed and I got a "C". My 1974 Corvette with a 350 cube will do about 15mpg and has less horsepower than the 1996 350 with Fuel injection. 1996 will do 26MPG . Both are rear geared the same ratio. Both are manual shift, the 74 has 4 speeds the 96 has 6. Final gear on the 96 is .049-1. Must be going 70 or better or it lugs...

    Not really. A lot of cars now are classified as ULEV's Ultra Low Emmision Vehicles(Honda, Toyota, some Domestics). They push 30-35mpg all day long. You're talking about big V8, V10 monsters.

    My father in law's Accord is a ULEV, in the top .1% as far as low emmission vehicles. He get 39mpg running 85-90mph with the AC cranked.

    Diesel is 2.51 dollar per gallon here right now.. I believe gasoline is a few cents higher.

    Denmark is about 3 times more though.

    Yeah... VW Golf Variant (stationcar), 1.9TDI with 4x4-Syncro which is great in the winter here.

    It'll push me through about 1-1.5 foot of snow.


    Oh - and the reason the fuel is so "high" here - is the current exchangerate towards the dollar.
    The dollar is about 5.40Danish Kroner right now
    It used to be around 6.20.

    So the fuel was normally about 2-2.10 dollar per gallon here.

    I have not thought about Hudson in decades...Or Lerner, which was another of the major CA discount gasoline stations. The price of premium at my local Chevron station has not budged, up or down, in ten days: Still at $3.65 per gallon.
