How long will deployment take?
Wifes nephew just joined the army, and passed his physical. The wife is balling here eyes out over it, I say it will be great for him! She needs to read the facts here form the guys that have been to the big sand box.
I told her for all we know he may not go to Iraq, his MOS could be a janitor at Fort Benning GA. Not to degrade anything, but who knows?

Janitorial jobs at most bases are contracted out. If he's active duty Army, he's looking at 6-15 month deployments. If he's National Guard or Reserve, 15 months. If he's active, he will be doing his MOS job over there. If he's in a reserve component, then he'll be doing base security, route security, area security, or convoy security.
Let your wife know that the issued equipment (ie body armor/helmet) is currently state-of-the-art proven technology that has been in use since the opening days of the war and has saved countless American lives. The US Army has the best training of any army in the world, we've got the best equipment, the best leadership, and most importantly, the best soldiers. We take care of each other over there, not because we like each other, but because we depend on each other.
Tell your wife's nephew congradulations, and that I'm proud of his decision. Also, let him know to never quit.0 -
Deployment depends on specialty and what the need is.
My son, Air Force Combat Arms, did two tours, piece of cake as he worked on base in the armory.
Now switched to OSI, last orders were from Army Intel, deployed with 82nd out of Fort Bragg, promised 9 months, already extended two- probably more to come. He's not happy as he will miss son's first birthday, war is a bitch.
Last communication from him: Dad, I joined to serve.
God Bless him and all of our brave men and women to serve.0 -
The current (normal) tour length for 10th Mountain Division BCTs in Afganistan and Iraq is 15 months. 0 -
find his recruiter and ask what he signed on for as a job. its called an MOS. it will be a designation number. if he went unclassed, hes most likely 11 bravo.....infantry.(11B) see what i mean?
if he fails whatever school he signed for....he will be 11b infantry.[;)]0 -
