yote ?
prove my ignorance since tghey are scarce here-abouts.
are these critters loners or more a pack animal like their relatives?
and just how quick will they take off on human approach?
one of my buddies was on patrol sat nite, thought it was a stray he would have to round up and find the owner.
yep, it was a yote! but when he got out of the cruiser it just laid its ears back and sort of shuffled a few feet TOWARDS him.
like i said, i no nuttin bout these critters, but i would expect them to be pack animals so a lone one raises questions.
and the fact that it approached a human sends up all kinds of red alerts. (we did have one test positive for rabbies about 10 mi away from this incident)

Ah great question for me. The wildlife man in all. Coyotes will pack up but lone males are very common. never seen a pack before always see one or two but i know of instances of packs in yellowstone of 20 plus. As conditions become harsh they tend to pack up or during mating season. Any carivore you should be warry of it might have rabies. 0 -
Ive seen them in family units until about novemeber. When the female kicks em off. In january they start pairing up for mating season . the pups of the year seem to hang out a bit. 0 -
There's a lot of 'yotes at the airport where I work. I've never seen them in packs. They usually hunt for field mice or rabbits in the grass around the runways. They are not afraid of the airplanes but if you drive your car on the taxi-ways they run like hell. We've talked about taxiing a cessna out to them and popping them from the plane but didn't want to get in hot water with the DNR. They (DNR) did tell us we could shoot them out of season because they are a hazard to the aircraft but the airport manager is adamant about us not shooting them. His daughters think they're cute. There's been a few over the years that weren't afraid of people and would get way to close. 0 -
In my parts, you have both kinds. The packs are the norm in the hills, but we do get the road warriors that will group in three or fours that hit the suburbs. Your not far off< I have done my fair share of busting some.

Some are dumb as bricks and will stop short to look back, BOOOM, RED MIST, the others are smart and run like hell if the know whats comming.[:D]0
