Has anyone else been an RA?
Has anyone been an RA in college? What was your experience? I'm just starting out, and I've heard mixed opinions about it. I haven't been able to move in to my new room yet, and I'm a little overwhelmed with all of the junk that goes along with the job. I think all the paperwork is just dumb, simply hoops that we have to jump through.
We've been in training all day long and I'm not sure that this was a good decision. I'm just curious if there has been others with the same position.

I was an RA a thousand years ago and the best thing about it was being invited to the parties as a reward for not knowing anything about them.[:D] Keeping the really obnoxious a'h@les in check was not difficult if there was a good balance of attitude for what was acceptable on the floor. As long as everyone understood what was acceptable between friends, and respected that, rarely did the actual "rules" apply. We just decided what we could do and get away with as a team with the same objective, have fun and if necessary get a degree in the process.[:D] 0 -

My RA had me and my roommate paint walls in the hallways, sorta like community service for throwing the beach party and hauling in all the sand. 0 -

I'm not too worried, but I've got the loud wing in the freshman dorm so things could get a little interesting. I'm still giving them the benefit of the doubt, I just don't want to have to deal with the morons that do dumb stuff. 0 -

Yeah, that wasn't a smart comment. I should have said that I don't want an excess of dumb people doing dumb things.0 -
The Wife was one in college for a couple of semesters. Lot of asininery and stupidity, but its a free place to live and they paid $1500/semester (not bad if you ask me; she bought a few guns with the $$). I guess it all comes down to the individual and the college's rules and regs and the compensation package. 0 -
I was an RA for 2 and a HD for 2. It was a great time, well worth the bs and stupid people. It was worth it just for the stories alone. Freshmen are the worst.first time away from mom so they will do lots of stupid stuff. I had a floor of upperclassmen the 2nd year, much better, not so many little bs things but more real problems. The HD is much more fun and working for a good HD makes a big difference. I think a good HD will help you play good cop/bad cop and let you be the good cop most of the time. The paper work is bs but do it with a smile because it will lay the foundation for dealing with future problems with students. Let me know if I can help.it has been a while but with the right frame of mind you can make it a great experience.

My best buddy was an RA.
He had a master key to all the rooms. One night he came in so trashed that he fell asleep in his bed/dorm room from the year before.
The kid whose bed it was didn't want to wake him, so he slept in a chair.

Depending on the attitude of your boss, you may have to set a standard of behavior. My buddy never brought beer in. He never smoked weed, but had to come down on people hard for doing it, although he never really turned anyone in.

Yeah I'm not really looking forward to dealing with these punks. Most of them smoke weed and drink, but the previous RA pretty much turned away and didn't deal with it. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to be cracking down on them.0 -
Can provide a little insight.
Don't put up with anything. Lay the ground work in the beginning, it pays back 10 fold in the end...trust me!!
I was the weekend campus cop. Yeah...small flashlight, shiny badge, and NO weapon (of any kind).
The RA's would call me when they could not handle it.
Twas easy. I would show up, laugh at the people, tell them to clean it up or I WILL call your mom, dad, grandma, or grandpa.....or give you a ride to a local motel. They had three options.
Only a couple times did I call the police - when lots of damage was done or when a kid was going bonkers.
Had it a bit easy though...one of the residents was a NAIA Collegiate champion wrestler....nobody messed with him.0 -

Yeah, my parents said the same thing. Heck it worked with my brother and I, we got told how it was going to be when we were little and we didn't push it after that.0 -
His philosophy was that people didn't get punished for breaking rules, they got punished for being stupid.
