Question About Microsoft Vista
I decided to upgrade all my computer stuff to the latest and greatest, which includes a Dell computer that is "Vista Capable" -- the Vista upgrade will be here the first week in February. I am currently using XP Media Edition, and will be upgraded to the Vista system that contains "Aero" with all the 3D bells & whistles. I needed to buy some extra RAM, and now have 2 gigs in the computer -- 4 512 sticks and all my slots are filled.
In talking with a guy that's supposedly up on this stuff, he told me something that may be worth looking in to. He says I should buy a couple of 2 gig thumb drives, and when they're installed Vista will ask if I want to use them as a drive, or as RAM. He says if they're used as RAM, they will operate in the same manner as if I had installed the extra RAM inside the computer.
Does anyone know if this information is correct?

Absolutely not! Thumb drives are like hard drives. That's like saying you can buy a 80 GB hard drive and have 80 gigs of RAM! 0 -
i have no idea as to the specific question, but i do have something to add:
DONT USE VISTA RIGHT AWAY!!!! anybody remember when the last version of windows came out bug free first flight??? no, thats be casue it never happened. ms has a bad track recored with just first edition software. it never works right. more bugs than a warehouse. constant upgrade and service packs. i always wait at least six months before using a new os, and only after reading many reviews.
ms uses the first edition of any software as a mass beta test. nothing else...
and please dont turn this into a "shoulda bought a mac" debate. he's obviously a pc guy since he just bought a new PC.0 -
your hard drive virtual memory is like ram, but not as fast, and defeats the purpose of ram, so i wouldn't rule it out as a possibility, but i wouldn't utilize it ether{so yes you could have 80 gigs of ram}
i myself will not try the new os until it has been out for awhile, and all the bugs are somewhat worked out, i refuse to me a ms test dummy, and have my computer crash, microsoft has a knack for making these new operating systems then selling them and fixing them after the fact, this is why there are so many service packs, they fix the problem micro soft did not plan on, remember windows 95 had a,b,c,d,e,f, then second addition which required service packs
go to control panel, click on system, then advanced, click on settings, then the advanced tab, at the bottom you will see "virtual memory" it will read" a page file is a area on the hard disk that windows uses as if it where ram"
you can set it to whatever you want with the remaining free space you have on your hard drive, so if vista will add these drives i do not see why not, but i also do not see why, it will sloooow it down0 -

he probably meant that vista would ask if you want to use the new drive it sees to put a paging file on it. I'm thinking that, because it would be foolish to use a USB drive as ram and do all the things that ram does, because it's waaaaaaaaaaaaay slower than ram. way slower by far. slower than a regualr hard drive even.
maybe it could be an option with vista, if you have to add gobs of memory no matter how slow it is, but that wouldn't make sense because that's what a page file is for in the first place.
your hard drive transfers data (to the ram and cpu) about what, 150 or 300 Gb/sec? ram is many times faster. USB is many times slower. it would suck.
the paging file, on the other hand, is a file stored on a hard drive. access doesn't have to be that fast. but, since hard drives are still faster, why would you want to put it on a USB drive?
that's probably what it would be asking, and the answer would be no.0 -
yep, and same as when Win2000 and XP came out, I advised everybody that asked to wait until the first service pack comes out before you get it, no matter what M$ says about how great it is when they first put it out. and I was right. I'm sure vista won't be any different, it will have problems at first. 0 -

now that I think about it, if you have that much ram (more than 1 Gb I think) windows doesn't even use a page file, it doesn't need one.
I got the speeds wrong (but USB is still 3x slower).
SATA 150 = 1.5 gigabits/sec
SATA 300 = 3.0 gigabits/sec
USB 2.0 = 480 megabits/sec
1 byte=8 bits, so to get the speeds in gigabytes and megabytes, divide by 8.0 -
2 gigs of RAM should be enough anyway, that's what Dell recommends.
The idea of using a flash drive that operates at 480 Mbits/second sounded intriguing, especially as additional RAM.
The guy that told me this is a Microsoft Certified Engineer that just came back from Vista training, and should know what he's talking about. The OS asking if you wanted to use the flash drive as memory or RAM is something new, isn't it?0 -

Maybe so, but I'll give it a shot and see what happens.
When XP first came out, I tried it and didn't have any serious problems -- just updates everyday or so, but the OS worked fine.0
