The Acme Thunderer Made in England
I guess I've been using The Acme Thunderer whistles since I was two years old. I've had the one on the right in this picture on my key ring since 1984. I hadn't tooted the whistle for about three or four years, and the other day I decided to see how this little Australian Shepherd would react to it. I took her out back, put the whistle in my mouth, blew hard, and NOTHING. The whistle was dead. Never seen such a thing in my life. I guess the pea must have dehydrated or something. Whatever caused it, it will thunder no more.
I couldn't find a replacement in any of the local stores, so I went to Amazon.com. They had it for $6.64 marked down from $94.80. I don't remember what I paid in 1984, but it was in the neighborhood of three or four dollars. Allowing for inflation, $6.64 sounded about right so I bought one. The best I can tell, it's the same nickel plated brass whistle I already had. They aren't identical, but real close and it works fine.
Does anybody believe these fantastic markdowns? What's the point in telling such a whopper that nobody could possibly believe it? If they had said "marked down from $10.00" I might have believed I was getting a deal. Marked down to $6.64 from $94.80? No way in hell. Could there have ever been anybody who would pay $100.00 for a whistle? I don't believe a single one has ever sold for that.

I'm sure this brings old memories, Chief. Always thought they had an eerie sound.0 -
Ah, the old Boatswain's Pipe. That's a nice one. [:)] 0 -
Must be the conversion from pounds to dollars to yen to euros or perhaps a grad from the e-bay marketing school. So is that a colt or s&w screwdriver? Is the P-38 a US Speaker? 0 -
ya should have just said, i'd have thrown one over..[;)]

The screwdriver is a Marlin. It came with a .22 I bought in 1971. The P-38 doesn't have any markings. This one doesn't even have the "U.S." on it. I wish I had saved more of them when they were all over the place. [:D]0 -
I have a plastic Acme Thunderer my grandfather used with his bird dogs. 0
