Bagpipes?

Does anyone here play bagpipes? Are they hard to learn? I've always wanted to.[8D]

    Very, very time consuming. No way as easy as say a guitar. Takes about 7 years to be considered just a decent piper. Of course, this all depends on your musical ability. Nothing worse than listening to someone who thinks he or she is a piper. You should NEVER EVER try to learn on your own. You MUST go to an instructor to learn the proper way. Check with a local pipe band. They will usually teach you for free as long as you agree to join the band. I'm sure they'll be happy to take you under their wing.
    A decent practice chanter will run about $100. Don't even think about purchasing a set of pipes until you've been on the Practice chanter a year or so. Your instructor will let you know when you are ready.
    When purchasing your first set of pipes, stay away from the cheapo Pakistani pipes. They look "close" but you will never be able to tune them. Go for a decent Scottish set which will run about $800-$1000 used.
    To learn the pipes, you have to be totally dedicated.

    My wife was in a pipe band - Dunloggin - for a number of years. She is an "open class" tenor drummer. Pipe bands are always looking for drummers as well. Especially the high tension snare.

    If you are really interested, check out some local Scottish festivals and talk to people there.

    My sister plays the bag pipes among many other instruments. She belongs to an organization of bag pipe players and is ranked in the top ten of accomplished bag pipe players across the country. She's also a graduate of The University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music where she majored in playing the Harp which is her main instrument.

    It didn't seem to hard for her to pick up the bag pipes but then she has a knack for being able to play just about anything. I on the other hand have a hard time playing the radio.[:)]

    When I had the shop up in Flagstaff, a lady a few houses down the street used to play and practice.

    It's the "whitest" music ever...and I never got tired if hearing "Amazing Grace"...I used to open the roll up doors of the shop to let the wonderful sound in better.
