Shotgun Choke Tubes

I have an extended rifled turkey choke tube for a Remington 1187 that reads "lead shot only". What are the risks of firing large steel shot through this choke, such as BB,BBB,T shot?

  Never heard of a rifled choke for any kind of shot but for a slug. Better read it again.

  I know of choketubes with rifles - but they're normally only used with slugs/sabots or at the claytargetting range.
  
  Rifled chokes are usually only used to give slugs/sabots a little spin - or to give a little bit extra spread on the shot (Usefull on close range at claytargets).

  One thing to think about, the choke tube is not made to use steel shot through. The steel shot will ruin it eventually..Why would you want to shoot steel shot anyway. Going water Fowl hunting?

  A turkey shot tube would be at least Full choke or greater. ( full is .682 dia. in a 12 gauge. A turkey choke is .640 dia)Steel shot thru a Modified tube is considered Full choke. Shoot steel thru a turkey choke and be prepared to go to the Dr. or emergency room . IT will take the end off your barrel.

  The choke tube is a turkey choke which has rifling in the end of the choke. The choke tube came with the gun and yes I'm going waterfowl hunting. Steel shot has been shot through the choke with no problems, I'm curious as to what damge, if any, the steel will cause. Will it cause damage to the choke or the barrel? So far about 300rds have been shot through it and other then some cosmetic marks inside the choke, no other damage has been noted.

  You have one or the other as far as the choke. With rifling it would be a Improved cylinder to shoot slugs and would not be a turkey choke. Steel can be shot with it. However your patterns will open up due to the fact the wad will spin out of the barrel . If it were a turkey choke NO rifling would be in it. Take a pair of dial calipers and measure the end or use a plug to push thru the choke ( off the gun ) and mic it. As I stated before steel thru a constricted lead turkey choke .640 will not work and is dangerous . That choke also should be marked Imp, mod, full, turkey. Steel thru anything tighter than MOD is not good and dangerous.

  What CAN happen, is that the choketube will get ripped out the barrel or otherwise damage the barrel.
  
  Some chokes are rated for steel AND lead at the same time.
  Do not use bigger shot than it would be rated for in any case.
  
  The material might hold up for a great deal of shots, but unseen damages will grow and eventually damage your gun (and/or you in the process!)
  
  
  The fine threads on the choke might get slowly damaged and the choke will get ripped out.
  
  
  The reason why you shouldn't use steel in a lead rated choke - is that steelshot is harder to compress (choke).
  
  Being harder to compress, the steel will slowly but surely put more stress on the choke than it was designed to.
  And making a choke for lead only, you can do it with less material or weaker/cheaper material.
  
  So, be carefull.
  
  It might hold up - but it won't in the long run.
