help with S&W internal locks + models

okay, i realize this is a highly debated topic, and i'm not looking to start a discussion as to whether the locks are good or bad. i have my own opinion, and i'm sure everyone has theirs. i'm happy leaving it at that =)

ok, with that out of the way, i'm looking to purchase my first S&W (looking at various model 29s) and don't really know the model history well enough to know what i'm buying.

what i'd like to find out, is if there some sort of a chart or table or something i can refer to that will tell me whether or not a particular revolver has an internal lock or not?

it's difficult to say looking at all the different models in these auctions, and it seems like the sellers don't exactly go out of their way to say one way or another.

also, what does the second number mean in the S&W models, like 29-10 or 29-5 ?

any help is much appreciated!

    29-10 or 29-5
    If I am not mistaking. The numbers after say 29 for example are design changes made to that model.

    My brother has a Model 19-3 wich came out in 1967 with the design change of relocating the rear-sight leaf screw which gave it the -3.

    But as far as which have locks and which do not. I can not say.

    I've seen internal locks with the key on the bottom of the grip, is that also an internal lock right behind the cylinder in the following mountain gun? If so how does it work, does it take a key or is that thing just a switch...?

    Takes a key. Insert key into the side of pistol, turn it and it locks the hammer.

    The locks on Smiths are on the left side just above the cylinder release. The locks were introduced in 2002. They never put them on the butt of the guns.

    The numbers after the dash in the model numbers represent different engineering changes for that model. There were numerous changes to improve design or cut manufacturing costs.

    Model 29's without the internal lock are the model 29-8 and earlier.
