Just got a Smith Model 60, its nice. It does not have a dash! I'm not sure if it has pine and recessed or not, I need to check. I got a new, used gun!

For home defense I would probably choose a 6 shot model but you can't go wrong with a Smith & Wesson.

    The price is Ok.

I am a huge S&W fan, and have many. But only a few J frames, and they are for concealed carry only, fo me at least.

If you are using this as your primary home defense weapon, may I suggest you look at a 686 4" as a possible choice? These are the best all around revolvers IMHO, and you can pick them up used for about the same price as you stated for the Model 60.

PS look for the original 686 or 686-1 models...they semm ot have the best triggers IMHO

sweet, the 3" barrel won't seem too unwieldy if you get a good compact grip.

I carried a Mod 60 3" for awhile. Hated the adjustable sights caused they would hang up on a holster. I recommend the no adj sight model. Also that light J frame will sting your hands with hot .357 loads. My gun got sold. I carry a Kahr PM-9 or a S&W K frame Model 65 3" .357

I think that is a reasonable price for that piece and that it is a good choice for home protection or for carry.

I recently sold a model 640 for $350 to a friend with a pistol rug and box of shells. I think those now are selling new for $500+

I used to load hot 38 specials in mine instead of the 357 mags for defense. Much easier to control and if you get the right ammo it will expand well and do its job.[:0]

+1 to what Sig232 said. The 3" Model 60 is a good home & carry revolver.

I'd stay away from .357 ammo. IMO the Model 60 is just too small for magnum loads. Definitely not an "all purpose" .357, but certainly a great gun. You got it for a decent price.

Back when I worked in direct law enforcement I had three guns for carrying: a Browning HiPower if there was a possibility of a significant shootout; a S&W Model 60 2" when absolute minimum in bulk needed; and a S&W Model 66 2.5" for everything else. Of the lot I preferred the 66 the best. I sold the Browning to my nephew when he went to work for the Los Angeles Sheriff and I traded the 60 to our neighbors son when he was hired as police officer for Walla Walla Washington PD. I never did feel undergunned when I had the 66 and two speed loaders. Since you have home use in mind, unless you're really in love with the 60, I'd consider a 4" Model 66.

I have two 2.5" mdl. 66's. A very fine gun to be sure.

I also prefer a 4" 6 shot for home protection. You get the longer ejector rod for more positive ejection with the longer barrel and the model 66 is perfect. 38 spl ammo is sufficient for around the house

I like the 2 1/2" model 66 or a Colt Cobra 6 shot for carry.
