How many 80# bags of premix cement will I need to do a 26 foot long sidewalk 40" wide x 4" thick?

Premix? I take it you've not done too much concrete work. Use the formula that Pabooger posted. Most concrete truck's will haul up to 7 Yard's of concrete with a 3 yard minimum. 0 -
26' X 40" (3.334') = 86.684 square feet at 4" thick = 28.89 cubic feet. There is 2/3 of a cubic foot in one 80lb bag of premix so 29 X 3/2 is 44 bags. Get at lest 48 bags as you are gona have some waste. As mentioned above the aggregate is small in premix but more important is the amount of cement in the ready-mix. This stuff is generally used to set a couple fence post or fill a 5 gallon bucket to hold a body down out in the bay. To get a good hard lasting finish on your walkway you should be using what is called a 5 or better yet a 6 bag mix. This is the amount of bags of cement in the concrete per cubic yard and what is in the ready-mix is closer to a 3 bag mix. So pick up a couple or three bags of Portland cement and add this to your ready-mix. The amount of cement will affect the dried color of the concrete so add the Portland cement in an even amount per bag of ready-mix. This is the simplest way to do this.
First, you have to convert everything to feet.
You already have 26' for a length.
40" wide/ 12 = 3.33'
4" thick/12 = 0.33'
Now you multiply all 3 dimensions to get you to cubic feet.
26' x 3.33' x 0.33' = 28.5714 cubic feet
27 cubic feet in a cubic yd. so:
28.5714/ 27 = 1.0582 cubic yards
You might be able to get a deal on a truck of concrete that went unused coming back from a jobsite, but there'll be no gurantees how long it's been sitting in there. After 1 hour, we send them away, reguardless how much is left in them.
Around here, after tax, it's just about 100 dollars a cubic yd now to have it delivered in a truck.0 -

675 x 12 x 0.33 = 2,673 cubic ft./ 27= 99 cubic yds. Figure a little waste and just the concrete's going to run you over 10 grand.
If a lot of concrete was needed in a pinch, on rare occasions I've seen them come in with 10 yds. but that's really over loaded. They usually haul 9 yds. max.
You really don't need much for your sidewalk so I'd at least call a mix plant and see if you could nab one of their guys coming back with a little left from somewhere. If you aren't too far out of the way that is.
Be sure to saw cut the surface, about half inch deep, in as even squares as possible for your relief joints. If you don't, you'll have a cracked up mess in a few years and it'll look like crap. Whether you're throwing mesh in it or not. You'll be glad you did.0 -

You are going to need one hell of a lot more than that...when it comes to concrete, you are always going to need more than you think. There are small concrete trucks that specialize in small loads...you may want to try to find one...and order yourself 1.5 yards.0 -

I mixed 50 bags a couple of years ago and that was a big job. If you decide to do the bag thing, rent a mixer from Home Depot or a rental shop.0 -
Just to toss a monkey wrench into this discussion, Some of the rental yards have a small "concrete trailer" that they load, you do the haul, dump and clean part. Saves all the mixing labor, and skips the "minimum load" that the real trucks have. 0 -
I have always figured a yard of anything whether it be concrete, mulch ect. is 9 feet X 9 feet 4 inches deep. I used this calculation and was almost exact when I poured 2 12'X 12' slabs and a 18' sidewalk. I ordered 5 yards and only had a wheelbarrow left over. 10 years ago it was $700 delivered with reinforcement fiber added.

10 posts up. You have to saw cut joints at even spacing, about 1/2" deep, longitudinal and perpendicular joints. Keep them as close to squares as possible. (The sidewalk just needs the perpendicular ones, of course.)
While it's curing, you need to either spray curing compound across the top, or cover it with some wet burlap and plastic so you don't lose the moisture out of it. Otherwise, it will dry out to fast and the surface may, crack and flake off.
You also don't want to wait too long before you saw cut it, especially depending on your local temps. When it's hard enough to stand on, start cutting. I've seen guys come out the next morning after a pour to saw cut and it's already cracked where it wanted to.
FWIW, I've calculated and been involved with many thousands of yards of concrete pours. I'll stand by my calculations. [^] Looks like most everybody else came up with about the same anyway though.
Definately want to figure extra. Since just a little over a yd is figuring exactly, order 1.5 yds.
Don't bother trying to mix all this by hand.0 -
